Jay gasped as he woke up. His eyes darted around the room as he looked for Lennox, but it wasn't Lennox sitting in the chair across the room. Ekaterina was watching him with uncomfortable intensity as she attempted to delve into his mind, and her unsuccess left a mark of frustration in her body language.
"You know there's never been a mind I couldn't infiltrate. Except yours. The recurrence's doing I suppose. She has you under her protection."
"Lennox. Her name is Lennox." He was hesitant to look at her, but he despised the disrespect she was showing towards Lennox by not even stomaching her name.
"I'm aware. I'd be a fool if I wasn't, or just ignorant. You call her name almost every night when you fall asleep. You miss her."
For stating the obvious, Jay considered being cocky. But with no energy to do so, he sat up against the headboard and went for a more honest approach.
"Yes." He was blunt in his response, but there was no viciousness in his tone, only fatigue.
Ekaterina simply looked him up and down with disappointment. "I had plans Detective Jason, for this world. For both of us. For centuries, my spirit was carried over from generation to generation, replicas of my life have lived over and over again, experiencing each other's existence. True loves finding tragic endings. But this was my opportunity to reach my full potential. To find my Drew for the last time and live as long as this world would have us. But you are not him. You do not love me. Lennox broke the cycle, and unfortunately did her job too well. It seems that I'm destined to conquer your world alone. All because of a girl who has more power than even I can fathom. She stole my happiness. And I'm looking at hers."
There was a darkness in her tone, and a look in her eyes that was far more human than she was - revenge. Jay felt himself tense nervously as she faded from sight, and as he looked out at the sunrise he hoped that Lennox was close to finding a way home.
