The moon reflected its light on the winding roads of Virginia as Kol drove past the Welcome to Mystic Falls sign. It was now one a.m. in Virginia.
A small smile crept onto his face, feeling a sense of accomplishment after driving for twelve grueling hours when they should have just taken a plane. Bonnie had offered to take turns, but he insisted she get all the rest she could.
Though, out of the twelve hours they drove so far, Bonnie had just fallen asleep about an hour ago. She had spent the whole car ride talking to Kol to keep him awake and alert. She spoke to him about her fears of confronting her mom, the promise ring he gave her, and about other random things happening in their life.
They also played a few rounds of I Spy and a Would You Rather game. Bonnie asked Kol if he would rather be Klaus or Elijah, and an argument almost broke out. Kol would rather be himself. He had to finish his answer with a, Because honestly, have you met my brothers?
Being back in Mystic Falls felt uncanny for him. This town was a tapestry of memories, both bitter and sweet. Bitter because Bonnie and her friends at the time were a constant thorn in the original's side, always trying to kill them—and vice versa. Or even the fact that he died here, landing him in the prison world.
Sweet because without Mystic Falls, he probably would have never met Bonnie and fallen in love with her, even if they hated each other at the time.
Kol glanced into the rearview mirror to see Alexis and Davina still fast asleep, leaning on each other as a headrest. They had slept the whole ride. Kol, was unsure why Davina wanted to follow them, but according to her, it was because she didn't want to be at the loft by herself. But Kol knew it was something bigger than that.
He yawned, rubbing his bleary eyes. He needed a long, good nap when they got to their destination.
Kol focused back on the road and suddenly saw the body of a male lying flat on the ground. Without hesitation, he hit the brakes with full force, jerking his body towards the steering wheel. "Jesus Christ," he exclaimed, his heart racing. Thank God for seat belts.
Bonnie jolted awake, her eyes wide with alarm. "What the hell, Kol?"
Kol's chest rose and fell with rapid breaths. "Look," he gestured to the road in front of them, where the headlights of the car illuminated the figure lying on the asphalt.
Bonnie's eyes followed his gaze and saw the body. She turned around to look at Alexis and Davina, who were still peacefully asleep. She narrowed her eyes, bewildered that that didn't wake them up.
Quickly, she and Kol unbuckled their seat belts and hopped out of the car.
As they ran to the figure, Bonnie stumbled and fell, her legs still heavy with sleep.
Kol rushed back to her and helped her stand. "Are you alright?"
"Never been better," Bonnie said with a forced smile as she dusted off her knees. They hurriedly walked towards the figure.
"Hello, sir, are you okay?" Bonnie asked, her voice tinged with concern. Her eyes went to the man's hands, noticing a ring. She knew that ring. Then, her eyes traveled to his face.
Kol sighed, irritated, as he turned away for a split second.
Bonnie's expression hardened, and she delivered a swift kick to Damon's ribs. He laughed, albeit with a groan of pain.
