“I can't wait to take you home"
Those words evoked something inside me. I couldn't point out what it was, but that feeling was familiar. Something that I felt a long time ago. Something that I thought I would never feel again in my life. My breathing became shallow as his words sank deeper into my mind. The proximity between us was messing with my brain even more. I could feel keen eyes on me. Watching our every move. It made my face flush red. Not many people were invited to the engagement. Only close friends and relatives. He wanted the event to be grand with lots of people, but I made it clear to my father that I wanted to do it with limited people. I'm not interested in displaying fake laughter and happiness in front of everyone.
I have no strength left in me. I'm exhausted. I exhaled deeply, and my eyes moved back to the stairs. It's been fifteen minutes since Sage went up to get the rings. Where the hell is Sage? Why is it taking her so long to bring a ring? He was holding me firmly as if I would run away the minute he loosened his hold on me. Maybe you will. My inner voice mocked. I don't trust myself anymore. He nuzzled his face in my neck, making goosebumps form all over my skin. The keen eyes on us became even more prominent. Why was he doing that in front of everyone? My body went stiff when he pressed a kiss on my neck. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to control my all-over-the-place emotions.
"Isabella,” I called her name to make him stop. It made him look at me from my neck with raised brows. He knew what I was trying to do. A smirk formed on the corner of his lips, and my heart started to beat fast. Daniel and she were involved in what looked like a heated conversation. But my call made her look my way. She walked to me immediately, ignoring Daniel's existence for only a few seconds. His jaw clenched, and his nose flared in anger when she did that.
"Yeah, do you need anything?'' Isabella asked me, making me avert my eyes from Daniel. Not before I gave him an apologetic smile.
“Sage went upstairs fifteen minutes ago to get the rings. She has still not come down,” I told her with a worried look on my face. Her brows furrowed when I said that. Her eyes moved all over the room immediately when something clicked for her. “Where is Xanthus?” she asked, still moving her eyes all over the room to get a glimpse of her brother.
“I saw him following Sage upstairs ten minutes ago,” I told her, with that concern still on my face. She slapped her forehead when I said that.
“Can’t he keep in his pants for a few days?” Isabella said in annoyance, and it made Erick chuckle, who has been listening to our conversation. I glared at him.
“It applies to you too. Isn't she going to come to your house after the engagement?” she said in irritation, and he got the message that she was pointing at. But he was so shameless that he refused to move.
“Why should I wait until we go to my place? Everyone in this room knows she is mine. I don't see any problem,” he said shamelessly, irritating her even more when he pressed a kiss on her cheeks, making my face flush once again. A shiver passed down my spine when he openly said I was his.
“I don't know how you all run your business with your brains in your paints,” she said in pure irritation. I pressed my lips together, stopping myself from bursting out loud, but in the end, I couldn't control myself. I burst out laughing, tears forming in my eyes. Erick narrowed his eyes in my way, making it hard for me to control my laughter. A chuckle passed Isabella's lips, and she moved her head in amusement. She exhaled deeply to calm herself down.
“Laugh as much as you want, but I will make sure to show you how my brain works,” he cunningly whispered in my ear, making me stop laughing. Once again, my face flushed red. I cleared my throat and pressed my lips together. Pretending as if I didn't hear it.
“I need to go find her, or else we will be waiting for rings till morning,” she said while rolling her eyes. It was true. Xanthus was giving mixed feelings to poor Sage. I know she made a mistake by hiding that she is a woman, but she had her reason. She had begged for his forgiveness, but he was not ready to give it to her before he had his so-called revenge.
“I will be back soon with her,” she said, turning around to go upstairs. Isabella came down with Sage after five minutes. After five minutes, Xanthus came down with a pissed-out look on his face. She gave the box to Grandma. She announced that it was about time to get everyone's attention. We stood in front of each other, and now the whole focus was on. My hands trembled with his ring in my hand. Take deep breaths. I kept repeating it in my head. My heart was thumping so loudly inside my rib cage. He took my trembling hands and slipped the ring immediately. My hand felt the weight of that ring. My heart was beating so fast that it was echoing in my ears. I lifted my eyes to look at him. His cold blue eyes narrowed when I took a second, long pause. The way his cold blue eyes were looking at me sent a shiver down my spine. I swallowed hard before slipping the ring on his finger with my trembling hands. I saw how his shoulders relaxed for a second before regaining their stiffness again. For people, just rings were exchanged. But for me, my soul was exchanged for his millions of dollars.
And just like that, we were engaged.
