A New Beginning at the Magic Academy
The morning sky stretched out in clear blue as Father left to take care of my enrollment process. Meanwhile, I stood alone in the academy courtyard, unsure of what to do.
What should I do now...?
Rather than just standing around aimlessly, I decided to explore the campus a bit. But after only a few steps, I noticed strange glances from the people around me. They were staring as if I were some kind of alien creature.
Why are they all looking at me like that? Is there something strange about me?
Though hesitant, I chose to greet them with a smile.
“G-Good morning!” I said, forcing a cheerful tone.
But they simply turned away and avoided eye contact. How annoying.
Fine. Whatever. I don’t care either.
Suddenly, a horse-drawn carriage rolled into the courtyard. But this wasn't an ordinary carriage—it was lavishly decorated with the crest of the Kingdom of Neverland. From within stepped a handsome young prince with black hair and blue eyes, followed by an elegant woman with long blonde hair and a crown upon her head.
My breath caught. My eyes widened.
There was no mistaking it... That was my mother.
Relief flooded my chest at the sight of her—healthy and smiling. Tears welled up in my eyes and spilled down my cheeks. The last time I saw her, she was crying as I was taken away by the kingdom’s soldiers.
Am I crying...?
I quickly wiped my tears with the back of my wrist.
Queen Eilaria—my mother—stepped down from the carriage along with the young prince, who was apparently enrolling in the academy today. As they walked, the Queen’s gaze met mine. She paused, staring at me.
“What is it, Mother?” the Prince asked.
“…It’s nothing. Let’s go,” she answered quickly and walked on.
I watched their backs as they moved away. That Prince… could he be my little brother? But he looked older than me. Or maybe… he’s my older brother? I did hear once that I was the third child.
As my thoughts spun, more royal carriages began to arrive.
It’s getting crowded. I’d better go somewhere quiet.
I looked around and found a peaceful spot to sit down, plucking blades of grass from the ground one by one. Somehow, it felt more comforting than just standing still.
Before long, Father returned. From a distance, he looked slightly flustered.
“How was the registration, Father?” I asked as I approached him.
He wiped the sweat from his forehead and gave a sheepish smile.
“Ahaha… It was a bit tricky. They almost kicked me out at first—they didn’t believe me. But after I paid the registration fee, they finally accepted it.”
I clenched my fists. Just because we’re commoners, they think they can treat us however they want…
Just then, an announcement echoed through the air.
> “All new students, please gather at the main field. The magic aptitude test is about to begin.”
This test would determine whether someone possessed a magic element. Those who did would be placed into the Magic Class, while the rest would join the Non-Magic Class.
The Magic Class would learn to harness and strengthen their magic, along with sword training. Meanwhile, the Non-Magic Class would focus on weapon mastery—swords, bows, spears—and physical training.
I turned to my father. “I’ll be going now.”
“Alright. I’ll head home. Good luck, Avrora.”
I gave him a tight hug. “Thank you, Father!” Then I waved goodbye and ran toward the main field.
Children were lining up in three lanes for the test. I picked the closest line.
In the line next to mine, a long-haired redheaded boy shoved the kid in front of him.
Who is that guy? So arrogant…
Thud!
Suddenly, someone pushed me hard from behind and I fell to the ground.
“You filthy commoner. What makes someone like you think they belong here? …But, you’re kind of cute. Wanna be my personal servant?”
I stood up, holding back my anger.
“No, thank you.”
He sneered smugly. I forced myself to stay calm. It’s the first day. I can’t afford to cause trouble.
But he didn’t stop. “Did you just reject me? You got a death wish or something?!”
I glared at him. My eyes flared red.
He instantly froze and fell back in shock.
Gasps spread through the crowd. I quickly returned my eyes to normal.
After a long wait, it was finally my turn. The staff checked me rather roughly.
“Hurry up and touch the crystal. As if a commoner like you would have any magic.”
Calmly, I placed my hand on the crystal orb.
It lit up in a dazzling blue glow.
> Water Element.
Gasps rippled through the crowd. The staff member looked stunned.
“How can a commoner like you have the Water Element?! Prove your power—over there!”
“Very well.”
His tone was completely different from how he treated the others. I moved on to the next phase—magic performance test.
After a brief wait, I was instructed to attack a wooden dummy marked with a target circle.
Most students missed entirely or barely scratched it.
I needed to hold back—to avoid standing out too much.
“Water Cut!”
CRACK!
The dummy split clean in two.
W-What?! But I only used a tiny bit of magic!
The audience murmured in amazement. A female instructor stared intently at me.
Who is this girl? How can she produce such powerful magic...?
The instructor approached me. “That was incredible, young lady. You pass!”
I smiled back. “Thank you very much.”
At least not all the teachers were mean.
Cheers filled the field. I turned to look at the crowd.
There, a girl with long black hair tied back and heterochromia eyes unleashed a blast of ice magic that completely obliterated the target.
Whoa… Amazing! Who is she? I want to know her level.
I activated my Appraisal skill to find out.
To be continued...
