Battle of the Flaming Wings

The evening sky turned crimson red.
I stood atop a tall building, watching as the Knights clashed against the invading Demons emerging from a dark portal at the center of the battlefield.

The clash of steel, the screams of death, and the roaring explosion of magic filled the air in chaotic harmony.
Even so, I had to admit one thing—these Knights were holding up better than I expected.

But that brief calm vanished when the portal began to tremble violently.
A blinding red light flared from within, and then… something massive stepped out.

Its body glowed like molten magma, wings resembling those of a blazing black dragon, and in its hand—
a greatsword burning like the flames of hell itself.

I held my breath.
“…Who’s that? He looks insanely strong.”

The remaining Knights froze in place, their faces paling the moment they recognized him.

“No doubt about it… he’s a direct subordinate of Lord Ragnarok…” one Knight stammered, his body trembling.

“Right!” shouted another. “We can’t beat him! Quick—call Lord Zhepyres!”

“Understood! I’ll go—”

Before he could even turn around, a flash of fire cut through the air.
The massive sword cleaved him clean in half.

“Uaaaghhh!!!”

I gulped.
…Yikes. That’s bad.

The Demon laughed thunderously. “Hahahaha! None of you will escape me!”

“Damn you!” one Knight shouted, raising his sword with trembling hands. “What are you doing here, monster!? Lord Zhepyres will never forgive this!”

The Demon sneered. “My purpose? It’s simple. Lord Ragnarok commanded me to harvest this world’s energy. With it, he will rule all creation.”

As his words ended, the portal behind him pulsed again—this time spewing out hundreds of demonic wolf-beasts, howling savagely.

“Damn it! We must hold out until Lord Zhepyres arrives! Don’t let them reach the world’s energy core!” yelled the commander.

“You stubborn fools!” the Demon roared. “Then die where you stand!”

Flames flooded the battlefield.
The Knights fell one by one as the demonic wolves poured in endlessly.

I clenched my fists.
…Enough.

As the Demon raised his sword again to strike down another Knight, I leapt from the rooftop.

“That’s enough!” I shouted. “I won’t let you slaughter them any longer!”

The Demon narrowed his eyes. “Hm? And who might you be, brat?”

The Knights turned in shock.
“Lady Avrora!? Why are you here!? It’s too dangerous! Please, retreat before you’re killed!”

I sighed. “Why do you always assume I’ll lose?”

“But—”

“Just watch.” I slowly drew my sword from its sheath.

The Knight gasped. “Lady Avrora, you’re not actually going to fight with that sword!?”

The Demon burst into laughter. “Hahaha! A little girl like you thinks she can fight me? Don’t make me laugh!”

In the blink of an eye, I vanished.
A metallic clang! rang out—and thick black blood splattered onto the ground.

“What…?” the Demon stared at his severed arm. “When—?!”
