An Impossible Reunion

I stood frozen in place.
After seeing that woman’s face… there was no way I could be wrong.

That was… Mom.

The same mom who had only existed in the memories of my past life.
Her body looked older than I remembered, with more lines on her face.
But that gentle smile—yes, it was the same smile as always.

And the cute girl standing beside her…

It hit me all at once.

That girl… could she be my little sister?

“Who are you, sweetie?” Mom asked with a warm smile.

Her question made me panic.

(Crap! I need an excuse!)

I forced a stiff smile and muttered, “...I-I… actually… Would you believe me if I told you the truth…?”

The girl next to Mom glared at me, her cold eyes piercing through me.

“Just hurry up and say it already, you idiot.”

I took a deep breath. “Alright… I’ll say it. I’m actually… Yuu.”

“EEEEEHHHHH!?”
Mom was so shocked she nearly dropped her grocery bag.

Without a word, the girl—who might be my sister—grabbed my arm and tried to drag me away.

“You’d better leave now, you weirdo!”

“Wait!” I shouted in panic.
I turned to Mom, trying to convince her.
“Mom, do you remember… back when I was in kindergarten, I pooped my pants, and I cried the whole way home because I was so embarrassed? I even begged you not to tell Kaede…”

Mom’s eyes widened.

“That… that really did happen. Yuu did go through that…” she said softly. “But it’s impossible… there’s no way you could—”

“I know it sounds crazy,” I interrupted.
“But I’m not lying. During the explosion at the bridge… I actually died. And after that, I was reincarnated in another world… as a girl. But my memories—they’re all still intact!”

I spoke quickly, full of emotion.

“Before I died, you were still pregnant, right? Then this girl… she must be my sister!”

Mom looked even more confused. “Hold on, hold on… Can you start from the beginning?”

I nodded seriously. “Okay, I’ll tell you everything…”

“That day… Kaede, my friends, and I were walking home from school. We were planning to study together.
But while crossing the bridge, a black hole suddenly appeared out of nowhere—and BOOM! Everything went dark.
When I woke up, I was already in another world, as a girl named Avrora.”

“I met Kaede and the others again… they had also been dragged in and reincarnated. That world was so different… we could use magic. I studied space-time magic, and now… I used the last of my magic to come back here.”

I lowered my head slowly.
“This isn’t a lie. I’m really Yuu.”

Without warning, Mom pulled me into a hug.

“Yuu… is it really you, Yuu?”

I hugged her back, my voice trembling.
“Yes, Mom… it’s me… I came back… even if only for a little while.”

“I believe you…” she whispered.
“Somehow, when I hugged you… I just knew. A bond between a mother and child.”

Tears rolled down my cheeks.
“Thank you… Mom…”

But my sister, who had stayed quiet until now, suddenly shouted.

“That’s enough!! Stop with your stupid act! Why do you believe her so easily, Mom?! There’s no way she’s my brother!”

I looked straight into my sister’s eyes.

“I’ll prove it. Let’s go to Yuu’s room.”

“NO!” she yelled. “That’s my brother’s room! I won’t let some stranger touch his things!”

“Yuki, that’s enough!” Mom scolded. “At least give her a chance!”

“Tch. Whatever.”

Ah, so her name is Yuki, huh?

We headed to my old room.

I opened the door to the room that once belonged to me.

It was exactly the same.

“This… it hasn’t changed at all?”

Mom gave a bittersweet smile.
“I couldn’t bring myself to throw away the memories. And Yuki… she’s the one who’s been keeping it clean.”

I looked at Yuki.
“Thank you… Yuki-chan.”

I picked up an old childhood photo from the desk.
“This was me… Ahh, if I had stayed alive, I probably wouldn’t look like this anymore.”

I walked over to the small safe in the corner of the room.
“This safe… only I know the code.”

Without hesitation, I entered the combination only I would know. Click.

The safe opened.

I took out a diary and showed it to them.

“My diary. You can read it if you don’t believe me.”

Mom took the book with trembling hands.
Yuki stared at me in disbelief.

“H-How do you know how to open that…?”

I smiled.
“Because I’m Yuu. Your big sister.”

Yuki collapsed to the floor, trembling, then looked up at me, eyes full of tears.

“I-It can’t be… B-Big Bro…”

I hugged her tightly.

“It’s true, Yuki… I know it’s hard to believe… but as long as my magic hasn’t completely run out, I’ll stay here.
So… let’s spend time together. Even if it’s just a little while.”

“I wasn’t even born yet when you died! I’ve only ever seen you in pictures! Why did you leave so soon, big brother!”

Tears streamed down my cheeks.
“I’m so sorry…”

The Next Morning

After breakfast, I was getting ready to head to the library.
Yuki, about to leave for school, looked at me with puffed cheeks.

“Where are you going, Big Sis?”

“I’m just going out for a walk. There’s something I want to check.”

“Can I come?”

“No, Yuki. You have school today, remember? Maybe tomorrow.”

“Hmmph! Fine…”

I left the house and headed toward the place where I had died.

As I walked the familiar path toward the bridge, I saw it from a distance…

There it was—the bridge where I had died.

Now, the area was fenced off with signs that read "NO ENTRY."
It was heavily guarded by soldiers and surrounded by researchers.
And in the center of it all…

The black hole—it was still there.

“Why is it still here…?”

In my mind, I heard Ai-chan’s voice.

“Hehehe~ It looks like the spot on Earth where the explosion happened experienced a spatial anomaly. So the hole remains visible.”

“I want to get closer… but there’s no way past all this security. Well… let’s think about it later.”
