Chapter 20: Things Take A Turn

We got off the plane and grabbed our luggage. We were about to leave the airport and find a cab but saw Grayson waiting at the airport doors.

"Mom not here yet?" River asked him.

He shook his head no and had a bit of an upset expression on his face.

"Can you wait with me?" He softly asked River.

River looked at us to see if we were okay with it.

"Go ahead. We're not in a rush." Max assured him.

We decided to let River stay with him for a while...
But we didn't expect to be there for 2 hours.

Eventually a woman showed up and said that she was Grayson's mom. However, as soon as we saw her, all five of us stared at her in disgust.

No offense but she legit looked ratchet as hell. She had on obviously fake Gucci glasses, gold heels with blue jean shorts, a red shirt, and a giant ass fur coat....did I mention her blonde hair had purple and silver highlights? What topped it off the most though was the huge bottle of liquor in her hand. She looked super raunchy and ridiculous.

"Come on kid, we gotta go." She said as she tried to grab Grayson's arm. River stepped in front of Grayson, blocking him from the woman.

"Grayson is this your mom?" He asked as he continued staring at her with a puzzled look.

Grayson nodded his head yes.

"Well hello there handsome." She stated as she playfully clawed at River. "Now come on kid lets go!" She reached around River to try to grab Grayson again but River pushed her hand away.

"What's your problem?" She asked him.

"You're drunk." He replied still staring at her with the same puzzled look.

"No I'm not!"

"Yes you are. All I smell is alcohol around you." He pointed out. Which was true. I could smell it and I wasnt even standing by her.

"Whatever man, hey kid let's go! I'm on a schedule here!" She yelled at Grayson.

"You keep calling him kid.... Do you even know your son's name?" River asked.

She paused to think for a moment but I could tell she was only pretending to think.

"Yea sure I do. It's uh- it's Cory right?"

I could do nothing but stare with my mouth hanging open. I couldn't believe this lady. River especially couldn't.

"Do you have anyone else that can pick him up because you're clearly not sober enough to take care of a child right now."

She stomped her foot in frustration and took a sip of her liquor.

"I am in my perfect right state of mind I'll have you know! Now get out of my way so I can get my son." She fussed as she tried to push back River but he was too strong for her to do anything.

"Get out of my- no you know what, since you're so worried about him, you keep him! I don't even want the fucking kid! He's all yours! Since that's obviously what you want!" She screamed as nearly the entire airport got quiet.

River totally didn't expect that. None of us did.

"No, I didn't say that I wanted to keep him I just-" He began but was cut off by the woman.

"I don't even like the kid! He's nothing to me!" She finished.

I looked at Grayson and saw that he was scared so I quickly jogged over to him and picked him up as I carried him over to where Max, Aj, Jordan and I were standing. Not too soon after I heard River lash out.

"You're a pretty fucked up mom I hope you know that. I've only known Grayson for about 4 hours but I can already see that he's an amazing kid. Do you realize that you basically just told him, YOUR FIVE YEAR OLD SON, that you don't care about him? No kid ever deserves to be treated like that especially by their Mom! So on that I note, I wil in fact take Grayson with me until you come to your fucking senses." He grabbed a sticky note and a pen from a nearby desk, wrote something, then handed it to her. "Here's my number. Call me when you want your kid back and we'll talk about if I'm gonna actually give him back to you or call child protective services. Have a nice day ma'am."

And with that he walked away and we followed him out of the airport while I still carried Grayson.

We caught a taxi , loaded our luggage into it, and made our way to my parent's house.

This break was already beginning to turn out a lot different than what I expected.
