Chapter 10: The Other Guy

AMITY'S POINT OF VIEW

Kanina ko pa sila hinihintay na dumating. I've read the newspapers but it still seemed unreal to me. I can't believe it. She's getting married at her age. My little bestfriend is getting married... to the man I secretly love.

Nang mamataan ko ang kotse ni Theon, napatayo agad ako. Ilang minuto pa saka lumabas si Dillenna. Matagal sumunod si Theon sa kanya. Nagsimula na namang magbulungan. Kanina pa, mula ng dumating ako. Wala silang ibang pinag-uusapan kundi ang "Wedding of the Century". Lalapitan ko na sana si Dillenna nang maunahan ako ni Matthew. He brought three red roses and handed it to her.

"What's this for? Is this how you treat your bestfriend's fiancee? You give them ... beautiful red roses?"she sarcastically muttered. I can tell she's still not over him.

"Come on Heera. I know you don't love TJ. You can't get married to him!"

Hindi nakatugon si Dillenna. They stared at each other for a while. Matt took her hands and kissed each of them.

"I'm ready to fight for you Heera. Just give me the reason to do it. You still love me, di ba? Ako parin, di ba?"

"Why are you doing this to me Matt? What happened to you and Janicca? Baka nakakalimutan mo, your girl's the reason for all of these!"

"I know. But she was never my girlfriend. We faked it. I want you jealous. I really want you Heera. You knew it. I was just an asshole for hurting you."saad ni Matt na nakahawak pa rin sa mga kamay ni D. "Heera. Please. Call the wedding off. Let me fight for you. Let's get this through—"

Maging ako ay hindi nakapansin sa pagdating ni Theon. He pulled Matt by his neckline and punched him.

"What's this Matt? Stop flirting with my fiancee!"he yawped at him who's now on the ground. He pulled him up and choked him with his own tie.

"Theon! Ano'ng ginagawa mo! Stop it!"awat ni Dillenna.

"Come on TJ! Stop fooling yourself! Alam mong ako ang gusto ni Heera!" With that, he took another punch from Theon.

"Ano ba? Theon! Tumigil ka!"she hugged him from his back as she cried. "Stop it. Please."mahinang saad niya. Hindi ko namalayang lumapit na pala ako sa kanila. I helped Matthew up whose nose is broken.

"Wag na wag mo ng lalapitan si Dillenna. I swear Matt... hindi lang 'yan ang matatanggap mo. Don't make me forget our friendship."he said and dragged away Dillenna with him.

"Matthew. Your nose is bleeding. Sasamahan kita sa clinic."

"This is just right for me. Di ba, Amity? I broke her heart. I don't deserve her. But she can't be marrying Theon. Not him. Alam naman nating lahat kung paano siya tratuhin ni TJ. He is just a jerk like me!"

I don't know what to say.

"Amity, what should I do? He can't have her. I can see it through her eyes, ako parin 'yong mahal niya. Should I fight for her?"

Wala sa sariling napatango ako. He's very sincere. He's even crying. I know he's right about Dillenna's feelings. It's still very apparent, she's not over him yet, bright as day!

Is this my role in Dillenna's life? To become the diary of the guys who love her? Whole weekend kong kasama si Liam. Kahit paulit-ulit na 'yong ibang sinasabi niya, wala akong ibang magawa kundi ang pakinggan siya. Hindi ko alam kung paano siya aaluin. And now, here is Matthew, doing the same.

"You know what Amity, I'll get this done. Wala akong pakialam kung mawawala ang pagkakaibigan namin ni TJ. For once, I have to do something for her—"

"Stop right there Matthew."singit ni Liam.

I was totally appalled! Bakit ba sumusulpot nalang siya bigla-bigla?

"Akala mo ba? Hahayaan ko nalang ng basta-basta ang Crawford na 'yon na pakasalan si Dillena? She's everything to me Matt. But I have to let her go and let that jerk become the father to her child."

Napatingin sa'kin si Matt. I gave him my look of sympathy.

"What? She's pregnant?"he exclaimed after a few seconds of absorbing his words. "They're only set up. Inamin sa'kin ni Janicca 'yon."

"I was with her last Friday night and the days before that. For fuck's sake, I'm her bestfriend. I grew up with her. Memorize ko na lahat tungkol sa kanya. I saw her changes, from her eating appetite and all. I was even there when she threw up. Plus, tita confirmed it to me last Saturday morning."

Hindi kami umimik ni Matthew.

"If you want to do something right for her, leave her alone... for the baby's sake."Liam said and left.

"DAMN TJ! Janicca affirmed it to me! Everything was just a set up! If she's pregnant, he really did take advantage of her that night."he clenched his fist and his jaw tightened.

After my last class this afternoon, I immediately look for Matthew. He's so scary all day. He kept telling me lately he's going to kill him. Dumiretso ako sa parking space. He must be there waiting for Theon. I was a little late. Pareho silang napuruhan nang dumating ako.

"Matthew! Theon! Tama na! Ano ba!!!?"singit ko sa kanila.

Hindi ako makalapit sa kanila. They're exchanging punches. Now, Matthew's on top of him. Kinukwelyuhan niya si Theon at saka sinuntok.

"Matt! Stop it! That's enough! Matthew! Stop it!" I grabbed his arms as hard as I can. Itinakwil niya ang mga kamay ko and disappeared from the crowd.

"Theon? I'll take you to the clinic. You're so messed up."

"Thanks Amity. I can manage."

"Sasamahan na kita."

I thought he's going to the hospital or what. He's driving straight to... Dillenna's place? Fine. It's about time to face her after all that happened. It's time for her to see how hurt I am of her words to me on the phone that day. It's about time for her to know I love her fiance.
