Archie's P.O.V
"But babe, it's not my fault. I didn't ask for this to happen." I protest as Becca walks away from me. She turns quickly and I see her eyes flash. It's an important aspect of Becca that I've learned about over the past three years. "I didn't ask for all this..." she states gesturing to the space where I'm surrounded by security despite being a senior in high school. "I didn't ask for this Archie, and I've told you countless times that I want to be with you, not with all this..." she states gesturing to me. My heart flutters at her words of affection but also it diminishes due to her choice of words. I look around at where we are standing, in the middle of a mall and although we've been together for three years I still feel that I don't really know that girl that I've called mine. "You know what Becca, I can't help that my mothers are amazing women any more than you can help that your father liked to drink a lot. I can't choose my family, but I can choose my future and I just don't see us working out." Becca's face turns four different shades of red and she begins to stammer, "oh no...you don't need to be so quick...I didn't mean it like that babe." But in my mind I've already made the decision. I'm dropping Becca, before something goes terribly wrong in public. I say nothing to her, I only walk away and the hired body guards follow at a safe distance. They know I resent the way that I have to be protected in public all the time, but at the same time I know that they are there to protect me. It's their job to stick to me, and that may be annoying but it's their job and I'm not about to ask my mom's to fire someone just because they're doing their job. So instead I suck it up.
Arriving home I thank the guards and walk from the car to the door of the apartment where another security guy opens the door and lets me in. I see that it's Matt, so I hi-five him and continue onto the elevator, luckily no one has to travel up with me, I'm allowed that small victory to myself. Letting myself into the apartment with the set of keys that I have I sense that I'm alone but I know that both mom and mama were supposed to be home today, making a wise decision not to venture upstairs. There are only a few times that I can handle hearing my parents have sex and today is not one of those days.
A few hours later the door opens and my sister Violet comes in, she throws her softball bag down and slouches to the couch, "how was practice?" I question while focusing on MBL on TV.
"Good, but the team is really weak through the middle of the batting ranks." I nod and huff out a response but neither one of us is really listening because we're focused on the TV, that is until it goes black. My hand reaches for the remote but I reach only couch, looking up I see mom standing there. Her hands on her hips and wet hair falling around her shoulders, "hey kids. Didn't hear you guys arrive home and Violet what have I said about the gear bag?" Violet shrugs but moves towards the offending bag. "Toss it into the laundry and I'll wash all your gear," mama states coming into the lounge too "have you got gear too Arch?" I nod and walk upstairs. As I near the top Violet comes rushing out from the laundry with her phone in her hand, "oh my god, did you and Becca break up?" I look down at her as mom and mama join her at the base of the stairs where I'm paused ¾ of the way up.
Turning slowly I nod, "yeah, she didn't like security so bam goes that...three years worth..." I state as mama hangs her head and mom looks guilty and Violet looks sad that she brought it up. She goes to speak but I quickly say, "I think I'm gonna pass on you doing my washing mama, I'm headed to the batting cages. I'll text for a car." But before I move my phone out of my pocket mama says, "don't worry. I'll hit them with you, let me grab some shoes." I nod and rush to grab my gear bag from my room. I meet mama less than two minutes later, mom and her kiss making Violet blush and turn away, still embarrassed by their affection. I don't have the heart to tell her to speak to family friends like Aunty Selena, Aunty Cara or Aunty Martha to hear worse displays of public affection. It's not their fault they're in love. As I walk out and mama follows me she lays her hand on my shoulder, "I'm sorry about the security. You know we can't help it. It's necessary." I nod and say,
"It's okay." But deep down I can't help but wonder if it will prevent me from having a normal childhood, and if it will affect any future relationships. It's not their fault, but sometimes it sucks having Karlie and Taylor Swift-Kloss as your parents. I love them like nothing else but sometimes, living in a spotlight makes you feel small. Like you don't matter or you're insignificant.
