Part #3 of Cute Neighbours
Love at first sight is easy to understand; it's when two people have been looking at each other for a lifetime that it becomes a miracle.

" Taylor." Karlie said softly.
"Huh?" Taylor gave her characteristic response, and opened one eye lazily to look at her. Pink blossoms floated gently to the ground all around them as sunlight filtered through the branches of the blossom tree, under which they had spread their blanket. Taylor lay peacefully on Karlie's lap as she ran her fingers through her hair. Karlie lived for moments like these. Moments of peace, contentment, love. "Taylor, do you know what day it is?" Karlie asked. Opening both eyes now, Taylor looked at her and squinted for a moment, shrouded by sunlight and petals, she looked like a heaven-descended angel. "Saturday. Are you beginning to forget the days of the week now precious?" She teased.
"Taylor!" Karlie sighed, "I can't believe you still call me that. We're not ten anymore, you know." Yes, they weren't ten years old anymore. But some things never change, Taylor thought fondly, watching Karlie pout but fail miserably. She eased herself up and brushed of a few stray petals. "What's so important about today then?" She asked. Days never mattered to her anymore, not when they were finally together even after their episodes with the mailboxes and letters. She'd had a hard time explaining that Karlie wasn't a perv to Austin. Thankfully her mom had intervened and made things simpler.
"Never mind." Karlie muttered, looking away. Taylor frowned, and caught hold of a strand of her hair. "Tell me or I'll tell Austin you really are a perv." Karlie smiled at the familiar old threat.
"You can hardly tell him that when we've been married for two years." She scoffed playfully,
"...besides I'm not afraid of him, never have been you'll have to do better than that."
"If you're not afraid then let me tell him, " She states smugly. Karlie just frowned at her and shaking her head she tucked a strand of hair behind Taylor's ear and gently brushed off petals from her hair. "Are you going to tell me or not?" she questioned gruffly obviously put out by not knowing. "Fine." She huffed, slapping Taylor's hand away weakly as it lay on her lap,
"Its Valentine's Day today, but it's not like you care!" A smile tugged at Taylor's lips. "Valentine's Day huh. And here I was wondering why I had a package with me." She mused, watching her eyes widen. "After all, why would I care?" She continued as Karlie leant closer to her. "Oh Taylor, I didn't mean it that way!" She pleaded, eyes wide. 'I didn't mean to offend you!" Taylor laughed, a carefree laugh that once faced extinction, but was often heard now. Karlie was still so gullible. "For you" she states affectionately on her warm exposed cheek. "I love you Karlie Swift-Kloss." Taylor states placing the red polka dotted paper onto her lap. Watching in delight as Karlie unwraps paper, a fancy pen, stamps and a pack of envelopes. She looks confused and then Taylor says, "for our mailbox." Karlie breaks out into a bright smile and says, "Oh Taylor, you're the best!"
"Don't use it all at once, the ink for the pen is expensive...kidding, use as much as you want." She teased, although Karlie knew she would never grow out of her teasing ways she only kept on with the joke. "Well while we have money, we should spend it all." Taylor smiles, "by our money I mean your money..."Karlie states her smile crinkling her eyes, and offered her a kiss on the lips. Taylor was feeling mushy today, maybe it was the Valentines gift but maybe not. Taylor could happily spend all day telling Karlie the different reasons as to why she loves her but instead being practical she says, "We better get inside. It's going to get cold soon."
Years later...
Still in the same place they spend every Valentines Day they laugh and joke as if time is still frozen from all those years ago. The paper is still used, the pen constantly full of ink, the stamps constantly replaced but nothing can erase the time and love that goes into the letters that Taylor often finds all over the house. When they had young children they kept it only to the mailbox so that the letters would survive but now in their late 70s the children only laugh at their peculiar ways but nevertheless they will happily pick up stamps for their mothers. Taylor as usual is the first to mention the weather, "We better get inside. It's going to get cold soon." Karlie nods and slowly they help each other up, relying on each other's strength. They weren't teenagers anymore and the cold affected them, Taylor grabbed Karlie's walking stick, while she wrapped a shawl around herself. Hand in hand, they walked back to the house. The world would see an old couple, bent with age, making their way down a cobbled path.
They had always walked tall with the strength of love, despite Taylor's weakened eyes that had to squint to see without her contacts or glasses, sun kissed cheeks, blonde hair, and caring eyes was all they sought after a long day, despite their ups and downs. Their body shapes had changed over time and they now both wear glasses full time, neither can see without them, Karlie has her walking stick after a hiking accident left her with a broken ankle and now severe Arthritis but still they both soldier on, proving to their children and grandchildren that their love was timeless, just as posting a letter. Those original letters of the words had lead both Karlie and Taylor to the life they have today. Where they are together and in love.
Those who love deeply never grow old; they may die of old age, but they die young.
