Taylor's P.O.V
"Okay so you're looking for something a little muddier?" I question returning to my notebook in front of me. The younger singer glances at me and then down at their phone and I have to remind myself to breathe and control that breath. "Look the way this song writing thing works is that you give me your idea, we come up with suggestions and write it together or I write it or something..." I state, "but I can't help you if you don't help me." The younger singer looks at me then looks around and I understand, it can be daunting meeting someone who you don't know and getting them to write you a hit song. I feel that pressure every time I walk into a new writing session, the nerves, the frustration that no one will let you be yourself. I have to control myself because I've tried every record label in Nashville and no one wants to sign me because I write too many songs about my feelings. They're all so biased though; they sign men who sing songs about women who leave them. Why not a woman who writes about women leaving her? I'm sure there are people out there who go through that side of life. It's not the 1960s after all, women do date other women. It is 2017.
The singer whose name I don't even know and I eye each other, neither one of us saying anything until I glance at my watch and see that we only have the space for another twenty minutes so I say, "so how old are you?" I try to act uninterested but I'm really interested to see how young these new acts are. "I'm seventeen, and to be honest. I don't know what I'm doing here. I have a whole heap of my own songs..." the singer saying this reminds me of myself nearly ten years ago when I would say the same thing but no one was interested. Back then I was fighting acts like Katy Perry, Rihanna and pop bands of boys and girls alike. "Well maybe the next session you can bring in your favourite songs that have been back burned by your label and we can rework them, try to see what they're about." At my mention of this the singer, Nadine I think her name is nods and stands up. She goes to move past me and as I stand she turns back suddenly and says, "I really enjoyed the session regardless, you're not as scary as your tattoos make you look." I'm taken back. But by the time I look down at my arm and then I look up to say something but by the time I look up she's gone, the door wide open. I shrug and begin to pack up my things unaware of the slight smile curving its way onto my lips. It's been a while since I last smiled.
As I make my way out of the building I get a call, looking down I see it is my asshole boss, Caleb Pringe. "Yes..." I state answering my phone and trying to balance my guitar, side bag and also find my keys. "That's no way to speak to your boss Taylor." He snarls at me, I pause and say,
"Really, I was under the impression that bosses actually paid you a fair wage for your work..." I hear a silence so I continue. "Good so we understand each other, once you pay me better, I'll be nicer." I hear him breathe deeply as though he's struggling to control his ager, not that I really care. "Okay, anyway I've got a new artist for you to work with, and by work with I mean. You write the songs, he takes the credit. He needs a boost in his writing." I nod and listen as Caleb trails on and on, I ask for the name and he coughs slightly and says, "it's Paul, my son Paulie." I pause as I'm placing my guitar on the backseat of my car and the silence must make Caleb nervous, his son Paul hates singing and is also a pig who has attempted to hit on me several times since I last saw him. "Sorry Caleb, I can't." I state quickly and not wanting to answer any questions I pray that he won't ask. "Well that's a shame Taylor, because here's the thing. If you don't help me with Paulie in terms of getting him signed and having a great debut album. Then you won't get paid fair." I sigh knowing full well that he'd attempt this, only this time I can say the one thing that he won't believe or expect. "Fine Caleb you win..." I deadpan and I can picture him, relaxed in his leather chair in his fancy office. "Grea..."
"Hold up, I didn't say that I was finished Caleb. I forgot to add that, you win and that I quit." I state hanging up the phone and turning it off.
As I get in the front seat of my silver BMW that I had been given almost ten years ago by my parents before they cut me off. I also have a shabby apartment in a not so great apartment block in the centre of Nashville. But since I'm now jobless in a city that is always looking for song writers I feel good about prospective jobs so I decide that a trip to the pub for some vodka diet cokes. As I call for the bartender three drinks later I'm aware that my vision is slightly blurry, but still I order two more and a few vodka shots. The bartender is keen to get back to the girl at the end of the bar, she isn't even that pretty I decide. Drinking the shots down, no chaser. I gasp at the slight burn that I experience but continue and move onto the drinks. I swirl the first vodka diet coke in front of me and drink it in two gulps before sipping the second one. Almost halfway in I sense that I've made a mistake as I slip off the stool, giggling and looking at everyone. Another bartender comes up to me, "miss I think you've had enough to drink, can you stand up for me?" I oblige him in an attempt to prove him wrong, but that's when I know I've made a mistake as I lose my balance and before I can grab the edge of the bar I'm leaning towards it quickly, I feel my head make an impact and before I know what even happened I can't see anything but black.
