Karlie's P.O.V
"Okay Cam can you grab that bag over there please?" I call out to our eldest son as I bustle away banging in the pegs of the tent that I'm attempting to put up with our kids. Taylor's busy away unpacking the car and tending to our youngest Matilda who is still napping in the car from the ride out here. It was only a two hour drive but I'm guessing her new teeth that are coming in are causing some difficulty with sleeping at night. But last night was definitely the worst night even worse than when Matilda had colic when she was a baby. "I got that one already mom, it's next to you." I turn and look next to me and see that bag that Cam's talking about and then I say, "okay well thanks. Can you..."
"Set up the food tent, yup I've already done it and mom's supposed to bring the food in but Matilda is crying so I think she's feeding her." I turn and look at him as he finishes my sentence and I look over at the car and I can make out the cover blanket that Taylor uses when she breastfeeds. It changes with the difference of gender of our kids but the latest one that we have is hot pink with stripes on it and I went out to buy it specifically when Matilda was born. We had already had everything ready for a boy which was what we were told we were having but when Matilda appeared missing the appendage that would make her a boy the doctor apologized and I had to rush to the store to get a girly one and when she started liking it the one time Taylor had to use it while we were at friends it became her cover blanket and it's still the same blanket and she still loves it just the same. "Okay, well I'll go and check can you keep an eye on Dylan and Poppy?" I question nudging my head towards our two troublemakers who are currently sitting and have the job of making sure the ropes for our tent is not tangled up. For a pair of six year olds they are very practical with their hands and love to get into the thick of things. They once did a craft project with paper but it happened to be Taylor's songs that she'd written the night before and put on the piano and instead of getting the paper from the craft cupboard they picked the good stuff from the piano and when Taylor discovered it my god did they get told off. Cam nods and calls out to them making them look at him. "Can you guys go grab Katie she should be back with wood soon, I think Amelia went with her too, so call out. Both go together." I smile at how Cam deals with his siblings and even though they are not all our biological children they all get on amazingly.Cameron is our eldest, he's now almost seventeen but he still likes to come out on family trips and our camping trip in St. Louis every summer is one of his favourites. Our next child Amelia or Mia as we call her is adopted, she's now fifteen and gets on really well with our second adopted child Katie who is thirteen and loves to trail her eldest sister. Both our adopted girls were nearly three when we adopted them, Mia was five when we adopted Katie and then she was nine when Taylor gave birth to the hell twins Dylan and Poppy our second and third biological children. After that we had decided that we were done, we have two sons and three daughters but when Taylor decided that she didn't want to put out a new album and wanted to do something else instead I foolishly said that she could do whatever she wanted and so at forty six she had decided that she missed the smell of a baby in the house and wanted one more. I tried to talk her out of it but when the fertility doctor said she was as healthy as she was when she got pregnant with the twins at forty it was settled and eleven months later after waiting a month and a half to start the process Matilda was born, extremely healthy and screaming. All of our stuff had become out dated and we had to buy more which I did and now that Matilda is nearly five months old I can't imagine life without waking up twice during the night to soothe or change a diaper.
Walking over to Taylor feeding Matilda I tap on the frame of the truck and she smiles at me. "Someone still grumpy?" Taylor shrugs because I guess we're used to Matilda and her moods, I see a grimace cross her face but when I look at her she simply says, "I'm so full that when she suckles a bit too hard it actually hurts. I never had this with the other three so it's weird, a weird feeling." I smile at her and peak around the cover and watch Matilda feed contently. I've always loved to watch Taylor breastfeed and because my career kept going strong it just naturally fell that Taylor would carry and birth our children. So now with six kids some call us crazy and coming away on a big camping trip with six kids is slightly crazy but it's something that we love to do and sometimes our families come down too. I know that this time Austin isn't coming but my sisters are hoping to come so fingers crossed that they bring their new partners so that I can grill them about their intentions. All three of my sisters have been in long relationships but things have changed and recently Kariann's marriage to her husband had gotten tense so she had left, while Kimby had been celebrating around Chicago and never settling on one guy until the last one Matt and he had turned out to be an asshole so I wanted to make sure that the next ones would be perfect for them. Only Kristine stated that she didn't want me to intervene so I'm not going to but I'll judge from a distance. As I'm thinking Taylor finishes up with Matilda and I take her to burp her. Taylor adjusts herself and steps out of the truck, grabbing stuff she makes her way over to the tents and as I follow I can see that the kids have a fire pre-made and everything is made and put up properly and so with nothing more to do I tell Cameron to light the fire and grab the marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate and we sit and make smores, the other kids head off to find sticks for their marshmallows and Taylor gets everything ready as I hold Matilda.
With the day fading to night and the kids full with smores and hotdogs that we cooked for them to enjoy I smile and think that one day hopefully our kids will do this with their kids but until those days I still have the ability to watch it happen. I know later tonight with all of us in the same tent that things will get tense between all the kids as they normally love to annoy each other but for now I can dream of a happy holiday and I can only imagine the pictures that Taylor or I will take and the Instagram worthy images of our kids will end up on and despite all the misery that will take place on this trip we will all still come back next year and repeat the trip all over again but next time Matilda will be older and Taylor will be able to do whatever she wanted because she's breastfeeding she often has to stay back with Matilda a lot. But at the end of the day I love my family and I love camping in this beautiful part of the country.
