Jonte's P.O.V
I have no idea where I'm headed when I leave St Augustine's House but I know that I can't stand to be around people who either pity me or try to persuade me to change my mind. I never let on to anyone that I am stubborn but I guess someone like Ivan who watches people for a living and can read their tells when necessary probably knows how to spot a stubborn person a mile off.
As my pace slows to a walk I turn and find myself in unfamiliar territory. I know that I ran for what seems like miles and miles but I like to run. I've always liked to run so it doesn't surprise me that I've come so far from St Augustine's House. What does worry me is that it's dark and I don't particularly know where I am. Hopefully it's not too far away and I can find my way back easily but worst case scenario I can call the police and explain that I am lost. I nod and search for my old phone that I usually carry but as I pat my pockets of my black jeans down I can tell that I've left it back at the house and I am now completely screwed, for lack of a better word.
I turn and start to walk back the way I ran but as I start I notice a car approaching and at first thought I think that it's Ivan coming to rescue me having not been able to react quick enough to my escape from my room at St Augustine's. But as the vehicle comes closer I notice that it's nothing like Ivan's off duty police truck that he drives around in and instead it's more like a Honda Civic similar to what my father's friend Dickie used to drive, but that's impossible. How could Dickie be driving all the way out here and how would he ever find me, last I heard he was in jail for armed robbery. But as the vehicle slows down to a stop and the window rolls down I hear that familiar voice, the one voice aside from my father Ivan's and that's Dickie.
I find myself stopping as the vehicle stops and I focus in on the voice, "it's a bit late at night for you to be wandering around Jonte or have you forgotten what lurks in the shadows?" I heave out a sigh but it sounds more like a snort. "No I haven't forgotten, as I remember you're one of those things that lurk in the shadows too." Dickie gasps at me and clutches his heart in a fake way that makes me think that it actually affects him but he's totally kidding. He still hasn't shut off the engine of his Civic so I turn and keep walking but he only drives on further, turns around and starts to follow me. Usually this would worry me but for some weird reason it seem normal to have Dickie trying to terrify me. It's just his style and something he used to do often.
I simply keep on walking but I'm well aware of Dickie and his Civic following me, I start to recognize the area and I know that I'm not far from St Augustine's House but as I approach the last intersection before St Augustine's and I'm nearly back safe and sound but then I hear the car rev up and before it even hits me I know what's going to happen because let's be fair. There is no way that Dickie would ever allow me to get away from him unscathed. I don't turn around as it gives him the impression that he's beating me which is something I can't allow. So instead I hear the car move steadily behind me and rev even faster, the revving makes me nervous but there's not much I can do about it so I choose to ignore it. But then out of the blue I hear the hand-break release and the wheels skid the next thing I register is the car hitting me behind the knees and I feel a pop. Instantly I know that something is broken in my leg or something damaged in my knee but I'm powerless to change anything. The feeling of being thrown over the windscreen of a car is unique and nothing that you watch on TV can ever prepare you for the landing on the pavement. As my head hits the road and I feel it grate my face I'm aware of the wheels squealing and the car roaring away without a care in the world.
All around me cars stop and I can hear chattering. The sound must have brought out the neighbours as I hear a familiar voice, the voice of Ivan. Something is placed over me as amongst the chatter I hear talk of a blanket and 911 and that's when it all becomes foggy and I start to fade out. But I know it's not over, it's never over until the fat lady sings and she hasn't sung yet. The last thing that goes through my mind is... 'maybe adoption wouldn't be too bad after all.'
Karlie's P.O.V
It's been three hours since we left St Augustine's House and ever since we left I haven't been able to stop thinking about Jonte, the way that he's so reserved and keeps to himself to keep himself safe. The moment that I got off the phone with St Augustine's House manager Gloria and she told me what Jonte had said about being adopted it only made me want him more. To adopt him, to love him and to share in his accomplishments. Taylor is also on board, she loves the idea of a teenager, a teenage son is even better because we are defying the odds and going against the grain. It would be easy for us to adopt a girl with us being girls it would be simple for us to raise her but we're not about simple. We don't simply take one option because it's easier than the others and we won't with this either. We intend to prove to Jonte that he deserves a family to love and support him and I want to prove that we are the best option no matter what.
That belief in adopting Jonte doesn't change, even when we receive a call from Gloria at 10.35pm telling us that Jonte is in a medically induced coma at the hospital nearest the orphanage. Gloria tells us that there are multiple injuries and that if we are serious about pursing adoption that we should probably come down. Gloria doesn't even have to finish her sentence as Taylor and I quickly grab our handbags and I grab the keys and then we are on our way. Hopefully Jonte isn't too injured and we could possibly convince him to allow us to care for him.
End of Part 5.
