Part Three: Speak Now

I used to think one day we'd tell the story of us
How we met and the sparks flew instantly
People would say, "they're the lucky ones"

The walls of my room at College are surprisingly empty when I arrive, I'm almost certain that by the end of the month they will all be decorated with drawings of famous buildings that I one day hope to help create. My letters from Karlie will be going in a draw and being sealed from all eyes aside from my own. I hope one day that we can bring the letters out and reminisce over our relationship. The bed in my dorm looks comfortable though as I stand in the doorway and look around, I know that I'm one of the lucky ones that does not have a roommate and I'm thankful for that. I don't know how it would go over with Karlie if another female was living in the same 4x2 room. At least alone I can be myself no matter what. But as I drag my suitcase in and place it down I can't help but realise that it's going to be a lonely few days until I can make some friends, I think back to how easy it was to make friends when I was younger. I met Karlie when we were five but we never truly became friends until we were freshmen at high school, it was just luck really. But she's so kind it's no wonder that I fell for her in the beginning. As I start to sort through all of my belongings and find a place for everything. It's amazing as to how easy it is to set my life out. Once I'm finished it's similar to my old room and that makes me feel closer to home. A few hours pass and I call my parents and we talk about my upcoming classes on campus. My dad is very enthusiastic that I'm going into a field where my name will come in handy. It's the that I find myself questioning him as to why my name is Taylor. "Well it's like this love, when you were born. Back in 1989, it was a dog eats dog world and men were winning jobs over females so I suggested to your mother that we give you a gender neutral name. A name that would give you status because no one would ever know whether Taylor Swift was a man or a woman and so far it's been great for you. I honestly believe that your name will take you places." I'm taken back,
"Wow dad, I can't believe you thought that far out when I was a few hours old." Dad laughs in my ear as I move the phone around and put it on speaker. "Neither can I but I'll always be proud to call you my little girl. I'm proud of you and I can't wait to hear how your first few weeks go." I nod and agree to call him in a few weeks. I talk quickly to my mom who promises to keep me up to date with the goings on at home. We quickly say goodbye and I text Karlie and mention that I arrived and that I have a single room. She messages back a simple, "I love you and I'll come and see you soon." That makes me smile as I continue to unpack and ready myself for the upcoming semester.

Long live the walls we crashed through
All the kingdom lights shined just for me and you
I was screaming, "long live all the magic we made"
And bring on all the pretenders
One day we will be remembered

The loud ringing of my phone awakens me from a dead sleep. I look at the contact and see it's my mom calling. "Hi mom..." I state in a sleepy voice.
"Taylor thank goodness I finally got through to you." I sit straight up hearing the concern in her voice, it's not concern that I've heard very often. "Mom what is it?" I question probing her as I sit on the side of my bed, fully focused on mom and her voice. "It's Karlie's grandmother. She died honey." My mouth drops open and I fall backwards onto the bed. "When is the funeral mom?"
"Oh honey it's in a few days time. Don't worry about coming back, Gina knew that you loved her and the Klosses know that you care about them. I'm sure they're not expecting you back." But I'm already up and moving to grab some clothes and stuffing them into a bag. "I'm already packed and headed out see you in three hours..." I state hanging up and three hours later I'm arriving in the driveway at home. My mom is up to greet me and as I fall into bed I'm awoken later by my phone vibrating and when I manage to see it after throwing on my glasses I see some of my classmates have text me asking where I am. I reply to all saying I'm home for personal reasons and they accept it promising to collect any homework I'm due to have. Staggering downstairs I see my mom is there, Austin is at school and dad is at work. Mom sits with me and we plan for the funeral of Gina later in the afternoon. I know that I will see the Klosses at the funeral so I don't plan to go and see them. I do text Karlie and let her know I'm in town. She doesn't reply but Gina meant a lot to her so I didn't expect her to. As the day progresses and we all show up for the funeral I find myself crying as I remember meeting Gina for the first time. I was fifteen and Karlie and I had just started dating, Gina told us to not be scared of admitting that we are a same sex couple. I loved that she was honest with us and that she told us not to worry. I loved Gina and I laughed through the funeral while people told stories of Gina, I saw Karlie and she smiled and me and motioned for us to talk after. I nodded and as the funeral came to an end, I moved towards Karlie and we hugged. "I'm so sorry Karlie, Gina was amazing." Karlie nods,  "Thanks, I appreciate it. Gina left us something," I look at her shocked. "Us?" Karlie nods and removes an envelope from her coat pocket.
"This is for us, it's a space that Gina brought for us. It has a space downstairs for me and a space upstairs for you. It's for your architect space, when you're ready and you have that amazing degree. Come back to me and I'll show you what I've made the space in the time you've been gone." I smile at her and kiss her lips. "I love you and I love that you're planning our future." Karlie smiles at me as I leave with my mom knowing that in four years' time I have a life to come back to.
