Part Two: Fearless Album
Oh, I stare at the phone,
He still hasn't called
And then you feel so low
You can't feel nothing at all
And you flashback to when we said forever and always
I know that it's Summer Vacation and it's my last one at home before College but I just never pictured my final summer at home like this. I admit I saw Karlie around me and us spending days at the lake, sunbathing and swimming. No doubt we would have ended up at a gym because Karlie can't go a day without her gym sessions. Not that I ever complain about going because she comes to open mic nights with me as I sing songs and play guitar which has always been a side passion of mine. Once I performed a song I'd written for Karlie and she loved it, recorded it and then made it into a DVD so she could keep it forever. But now it's different. We've been separated for nearly two months and it's two months more than I ever pictured for us, which makes me nervous because the whole time we've been together I've never had to think about what comes next. What do I do next without her. How do I actually become my own person and do things by myself. The only conclusion that I come to is that I need to call my friends and see if they want to go camping.
And we know it's never simple, never easy.
Never a clean break, no one here to save me.
You're the only thing I know like the back of my hand,
And I can't breathe without you
But I have to.
Breathe without you
But I have to.
It's now only three weeks until I leave for College, I'm not going that far only three hours from home but it's still a large adjustment as I've only ever stayed away from home for a month at a time and that was sleep away camp. I've decided that today is the day that I'm going to stop moping around, I'm going to do it for me but also for my family who have been putting up with it too. I've taken an afternoon off from my job at the bookstore and decided to go and grab coffee for my family on the way home. Stopping the car that I borrowed from my dad as I'd intended to do this, usually I'd walk to work. I step into my favourite coffee shop and head for the till, thinking about the first time that I was ever here. "Karlie no, come on that place is for sophisticated people. Not people like us who giggle wayyy too much." I pout staring at Karlie like she's grown three heads. She laughs, "No come on, we need to check it out. It smells amazing. I'll buy you an iced chocolate..." she states knowing I'm not a coffee fanatic like her. I look into her eyes as they seem to guide us both in. "Okay fine, but if I hate it we are never coming back." She nods but I think the pair of us know by the smell of the coffee that we will be back. I shake my head remembering the last few months where we would come here nearly every day, Karlie would order her pot of coffee and me a jug of water and she would watch me study while she pretended to do her math homework. But I shake my head, 'you can't get caught up Taylor...let it go'. I'm fully intending on letting it go when I happen to glance to see who is filling the old table that was our spot. I smile at the pair of girls holding hands and whispering to each other. It brings back such memories, but in a sudden instant those memories are tarnished when one of the girls turns and looks at me. Karlie. She looks panic struck and I imagine I have the same look on my face. Turning blindly and without even ordering I rush outside to the pavement where I bend over and take in large amounts of air. Trying to breathe because nothing ever hurt so much before.
I took a chance, I took a shot
And you might think I'm bulletproof, but I'm not
You took a swing, I took it hard
And down here from the ground I see who you are
It's the eve before I'm set to leave for College. I haven't seen or talked to Karlie or any of my friends for the last three weeks. Not that I was talking to Karlie to begin with and although it seems strange I've never been happier. But packing the last of my things last night I came across photo albums and I just look at them, my hand tracing the cover and it's then that I decided that today had to happen. I'd been putting it off for a while. Today is the last full day at home and so I find myself in front of a familiar brick house. I'd walked here before and it used to seem like such a long way but today it didn't seem to take long at all. I see familiar people scuttling about the house and I know it's the twins getting ready for the day or Karlie's parents heading off to work. That doesn't stop me, I walk up to the house that I know like the back of my hand and for the first time in five years I ring the doorbell. The noise from within the house ceases and footsteps approach the door, as it opens I see a hint of brown hair and Tracy Kloss looks at me, her eyes open wide. "Taylor what are you doing, come in you silly girl. Have you had breakfast?" this is the Tracy I remember, I nod and she hugs me. "Well it's so good to see you, I assume you're here to see Karlie though," I nod and she calls out to Karlie who slinks in and she looks at me in shock. Tracy leaves us alone and we sit down in the lounge, nothing much has changed in this house aside from the fact that I knocked before I was allowed in. "So what's this call for?" Karlie questions bringing my focus back to her. "I want to know why Karlie, I want to know why you cheated on me. What did I do wrong?" I question in one big mouthful. Karlie looks at me in shock, "nothing, you didn't do anything wrong it was all me. I liked the attention I got from Ashley and I was dumb enough to fall for her charms. I would have told you straight away when she kissed me. You just walked into the library. I meant what I said though..." she stated and I stared at her confused, "it was a mistake. I never meant to hurt you or to put myself in that position but it happened. I didn't want to push you to talk to me. I hoped you'd do it by yourself." I look at her slightly confused but I stand and nod.
"I understand, but it happened and you saying a mistake and that you were sorry didn't change anything. It still happened, but I'm glad I know now. I just wanted to see you one more time before I leave tomorrow. This was my once chance to see you.
Tonight we'll stand, get off our knees
Fight for what we've worked for all these years
And the battle was long, it's the fight of our lives
But we'll stand up champions tonight
Today is the day that I am officially becoming part of adult life. Leaving my parent's house and moving to College, starting my own life and becoming what I always dreamed, an architect. I want to design houses, the more elaborate the better but I also want to design houses for families, I hope to one day have my own and design our house. But for now I know better than to dream dreams that are four or more years away. As my brother and dad load the last of my things into my car and shut the doors I smile at them. This is it, my first great adventure alone, my mom is already dabbing at her eyes, it's already her third round of tears today. Dad is puffing his chest trying to look like he's not going to break down but Austin looks lost. He glances around the street where we live and I assume that it's because he doesn't want to admit he's going to miss me. "It's okay Austin," I state hugging him close. "I love you and I'll be back before you know it..." he squirms but I hold him,
"Eww it's not that Taylor, I just I, invited someone to say goodbye to you." I reel back and turn around to see the Klosses standing behind me, "we all came to say goodbye," Tracy states as all the Klosses step up and hand me a bunch of flowers. "We love you so much kiddo, you've been part of our household for nearly seven years, we couldn't not be a part of sending you off." I wipe my eyes and hug the entire family. They soon merge with mine and I'm left with just Karlie. "I'll never be sorry," I state but Karlie doesn't let me finish and instead kisses my lips, dragging me into her body. I give in way to easy and she hugs me close. As we part I notice everyone going inside and I know it's because they've all said their goodbyes and now I have to say goodbye to Karlie. "I know you're not sorry, but I'm sorry for all the mistakes. Four years from now you'll be an architect and a damn good one too, I'll be here waiting for you. I'm going to text you everyday, call you twice a week and send you letters once a week. I'm not going anywhere and I will fight for us, every day for the next 1461 days. I will fight. You aren't getting away from me, not again. These lips..." she states tracing my lips and making them tingle, "...are mine, they are made for my lips. They fit my lips and I promise you from now on the only lips I will ever kiss again will be your lips and our children's lips." I gasp and look at Karlie who nods and leads me to my car, she opens the door and helps me in. As I sit there she watches, humoured at the fact I can not speak. I look at her and go to speak but she stops me. "I know Taylor, you need time. You have time, 1461 days but I will be here waiting for you. I love you." I nod and start the car and start to drive, driving away from the only home I know but also from my one true love.
