"You were born into a family that doesn't always appreciate you...but one day things will be very different." – Miss Honey, Matilda (1996)
"Go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep little Tommy..." I hum lowly as I rock Tommy backwards and forwards until he lays his head on my shoulder and is out. Lying him down in the crib at the foot of the bed I stand and stretch. Glancing at the clock over my shoulder I see that it's now 6.46pm and I need to shower and clean myself up before Karlie gets home.
Standing in the shower letting the water run over me I can't help but think about how crazy my life has become since I stopped touring and faded to the background. I always said that I hoped that I would know when my time was done, when the lights would fade that I would realise that this was it, my time to take a bow. I took that acknowledgement after Reputation came out. I had decided before it even came out that this was it. The end of an era before the era really began. Life was complicated and messy and everything that life should have been when I was 27 nearly 28. I loved where life was going and I had a constant in my life, my boyfriend Joe. Not Joe Jonas but Joe Alwyn, he was such a man and he treated me so well, but despite it all I wasn't happy. I wanted something different and that different at the time was Karlie. I wanted her so badly, and she knew it. She avoided me like nothing else, making sure we were never in the same city and different time zones were her favourite because when she was waking up I was going to bed and it was always late.
2018 was when things finally changed, I finally caught her and I made sure that she knew that I wanted her, and that I needed her. I begged for her to give me the opportunity to try and make things work. I persuaded her with promises of quitting touring, we spoke of what would come next, what Karlie wanted and what I wanted. She made it clear that our age was an issue but I called bullshit on that one. She decided to give me a chance and so we tried, and we succeeded because times were hard but we fought through it.
Now as the water falls over my head I hear a dull thunk from downstairs, the front door shutting which means that Karlie is home. She will be home with our princess, Princess Ana our six year old angel who we met at an adoption open house in St. Louis nearly two years ago. She was so scared, and wouldn't look us in the eyes the first time we met her. It took us three weeks of visiting every day for us to change her view of us, to stop her from looking at the ground. After we were able to get Ana to look at us we started bringing her small treats, an ice-cream cone, a teddy bear and finally a Barbie doll. By the time we brought her the doll, she would say the occasional thing to us. It was then that we decided that Ana was worth any drama that we would ever go through in our lives, she was worth it. The road to adoption was hard and long but it was worth it and every step that we ever made with Ana was worth it and when she became ours twelve months later after living with us for the last six months. Now she's a happy six year old and no one outside our family would ever be able to guess that she was adopted. She's so much like Karlie it's uncanny at times, her green eyes match her mama's and that killer smile that lights up the room.
Stepping out of the shower and drying myself off I quickly slide into a pair of pyjama bottoms and Karlie's old Cardinals t-shirt. Checking Tommy who is still sleeping I flick on the baby monitor and then step out of the room, heading downstairs and following the voices of Karlie and Ana to the lounge. It's cute to see the two of them play fighting over the remote for the TV, "no mama, it's my turn..." Ana cries out making Karlie laugh at her and then after a bit of trickery Karlie hands it to Ana. I still chose to stay in the shadows as Ana quickly finds her favourite movie but it starts halfway. Before it can even start properly Karlie reaches over and scoops Ana into her lap and whispers to her, "You were born into a family that doesn't always appreciate you...but one day things will be very different, and that day is today." Ana smiles and hugs Karlie while saying, "I love you mama," it warms my heart and I sniff and sigh loudly which alerts Ana to my place. "Mommy, you're here. Look mama, it's mommy. Let me down..." Karlie smiles and lets her go as Ana races to me and I say, "hi bunny, shouldn't you be watching with mama? I'll make you some cocoa." Ana nods and jumps up and down before throwing herself across Karlie and engaging herself in Matilda.
