Fresh Eyes

"Taylor, come on. If you don't hurry up with that make-up then Sonia will be here to check out the house and you'll still be dancing around in your underwear and bra. Come on." Karlie calls as the two women rush around the house getting organized for the social worker. Taylor takes one final look in the mirror and then smiles, today they were getting a baby. Neither Taylor nor Karlie had any idea what the sex of the baby would be only that it was a premature baby at birth that was taken in by Social Services less than an hour later. The hospital had cleared the baby after eight weeks in NICU and now the baby was coming to them. "Alright Karlie, I'm ready what time is it?"
"8.55am, she's supposed to be here at 9.00am..." Taylor walks into the bedroom and sees Karlie doing up her boots and Taylor quickly puts on a pair of maroon jeans and a green jersey since it's so cold outside. It's nearly Christmas so it's been a bit of trouble trying to get a nursery set up in neutral colours that we can change after we know the sex of the baby.

A few minutes pass of Taylor and Karlie sitting nervously on the couch and then there is a knock on the door and they both look at each other and smile knowing that this is it. The moment that they open the door their lives will change. "Come on Karlie," Taylor states dragging her nervous wife towards the door. "I'm coming," Karlie states and they take deep breaths and then open the door. The main thing that they can see is Sonia, the woman that they've been in contact with for the better part of two years trying to organize their adoption. But then they notice the small bundle in her arms and Taylor immediately steps forward and Sonia smiles. "Here you are Taylor," Sonia states handing the small baby to Taylor who hugs it close and then Sonia states, "congratulations girls. It's a baby girl." Taylor smiles and Karlie laughs and welcomes Sonia in. "Thank-you so much." Karlie gushes as Sonia smiles and accepts a cup of tea when Karlie makes it. "It's not exactly hard to figure out that you will be amazing parents to her, it's been a long two years but I also knew that the adoption had to be perfect so hopefully that's what it is to you. Perfect." Both the girls nod and fawn over their newest addition to their family.

"Babe, have you seen Poppy's beautiful green eyes?" Taylor questions as Poppy lies between Taylor's legs content after a bottle of formula and now looking up at her mother with sleepy eyes. "Yeah I have, they look a little like someone else's eyes now don't they?" Karlie questions while staring at her wife as she stands in the doorway of the bathroom off of their bedroom. Taylor looks down towards the baby and smiles, "I guess she has similar coloured eyes to me but I think she's got lighter ones, not as dark as mine." Karlie only laughs at her wife and says,
"I think that you are ignoring facts baby, that little girl has the exact same coloured eyes as you and you know it as well as I do." Karlie states while walking towards the rest of her family and she sits down and kisses Taylor on the forehead. "She's going to be a real beauty..." Taylor states as Karlie looks down and smiles at the now sleeping baby, she's overcome with the amount of love that I have for that little girl.

"Mom! I can't find that dress we got the other day at the mall." Poppy calls as Taylor walks past the door on her way towards the kitchen. "Poppy I'm a little busy can't you ask mama to help you she's only in the bathroom next door." Poppy groans openly but moves towards her mama and asks the same question making Karlie stop in her tracks and help her eldest daughter to find her dress, the bright green shinny dress that had been brought for the special dance that Poppy's school was putting on that night. Poppy was so excited because she had recently gotten a boyfriend Matthew and although he had originally been star struck by her parents he had come around after two different meals with the Swift-Kloss family. "Oh it's hanging in the back closet...just check there." Karlie states as Poppy smiles and rushes back off to get ready for her date.

Less than an hour later a very handsome Matthew Stringer is standing in the foyer of the Swift-Kloss household dressed in a dapper suit and tie and as he makes small talk with Karlie and Taylor, Poppy is upstairs getting organized and as the clock strikes 8.15pm she begins her descent down the stairs and as soon as her foot touches the first stair Matthew's eyes glance up and he quickly states, "wow, you look amazing." Poppy only smiles and continues to walk gracefully down the stairs as Karlie and Taylor smile watching Matthew step forward and offer his arm to his girl. "I mean it, amazing, stunning and every other word of adornment in the world. You look amazing and I can't wait to show you off later on..." this makes Poppy grin and hug him, she pulls back only to state that he smells great and she can't wait for the dance. As they talk to Poppy's mothers for a few minutes, they then leave.

Years Later...

Matthew Stringer smiles in joy as he watches his soon-to-be wife waltz down the aisle smoothly as if it has been practiced for years which in some ways is true as she has taken on the stance of one of her mothers. Both Taylor and Karlie guide their daughter down the aisle just like Poppy always wanted. It's hard for Matthew to not think about the night they had their first school dance and Poppy wore that amazing green dress. While Matthew thinks about the green dress from years past Karlie and Taylor are thinking similar things although it's more along the lines of when Poppy was a baby and hours later as Poppy and Matthew depart for the hotel down the road where they will spend their first night as a married couple and all they can think of it that the tiny baby they had been given to care for and nurture almost twenty eight years ago was now a married woman but they still think of her as the small baby nestled in Sonia's arms. "Hard to believe that the baby that was once a stranger to us is now our daughter and one of our greatest accomplishments, isn't it?" Taylor questions as Karlie and her get ready for bed. "I know but the moment that those eyes looked at me I was like 'ohh damn' she got me from the start and that's something that's never changed.
