Christmas

It was quiet at the dinner table. Tonight was a very informal night, so it was just you, your dad, and your uncle eating at a smaller table. The food was still grand, but you were all very casual in manners and dress. This was the only reason why you decided to ask the question you had been thinking about for the past week.

"Dad?" you started. He stopped the food from moving closer to his mouth and looked up at you, so you took this as a signal to keep talking. "Can we go to Earth for Christmas?"

Something thumped down onto the table and you snapped your head over to look at your uncle who had dropped his turkey leg onto his plate. Then it was silent. You looked back over to your dad to see his reaction and was met with a shocked and confused expression.

He stuttered a bit before setting his fork down and leaning back in his chair. "May I ask what brought this to your mind?" he asked. He was 90% sure it was your uncle's fault. "You've never asked to go to Earth before, so why now?"

You swallowed and used your fork to push some food around on your plate. "Well, I may have ever asked to but that doesn't mean I've never thought about this before..." you trailed off as you focused on messing with the elegant fruits on your plate. "This year I just thought I'd ask, just in case, you know?" You finally looked up at your father to see no emotions on his face- he was really good at doing that when he didn't want you to get any hints as to what he was thinking.

The answer seemed obvious, so you just cleared your throat softly and looked down. "But I see now that that just wouldn't work." It was quiet for a second and you felt embarrassment crawl up and heat your face. "Excuse me," you mumbled and stood from the table to go back to your room. Another thing you liked about casual dinners: you could just leave if you wanted to.

Once back in your room, you sighed and let your eyes water slightly at how ridiculous that was. Of course your father wouldn't want to go back to Earth- a place that hated him deeply. You walked over to the desk you had across from your bed and closed the journal that was opened. The cover read, in your handwriting, "Plans For Midgard"(even though you've been working on calling it Earth). The journal was filled with things you wanted to do on Earth. You only knew about the things your uncle had told you about, what you had read in books, and what you over heard others saying. The journal was mostly filled with random things like going to a place called Verona where two star-crossed lovers died for each other. The main reason though, one that you would never reveal to your dad, was much more personal for you.

Your mother is a human. You've never met her and don't even know her name. Your dad didn't like to talk about her, and neither did your uncle, so you can only go off small memories you have of her and what little you've gotten your dad to say. That was the main reason. For all you know, she could be dead, but you just wanted some sort of closure.

After the journal was stowed away in a secret spot in the desk, you flopped onto your bed and grabbed a pillow to hug. A few tears rolled down your face and you didn't stop them. Of course you were sad, so of course you'd cry a bit.

There was a very soft knock on your door followed by the sound of it opening slightly. "May I come in?" It was your dad. Since you figured he could see you, you just nodded. You heard the door close and then felt your bed shift as he sat down on the edge. "(Y/n), the first thing I want you to know is that I am not mad. Not even close. Surprised, yes, but certainly not mad," he started. His voice was soft and it reminded you of the times he was there to comfort you when you were much younger.

You sat up and scooted over to sit next to him. With your feet curled up next to you, you leaned into his side as he gave you a hug. "I'm sorry if I seemed annoyed with you at dinner after you asked. I just... I'm still learning how to process information and that was very sudden."
