"Hey, you must be Shawn?"

The man looked at you with a smile. "That must make you (Y/n). So nice to meet you!"

You smiled back and sat down next to him at the bar, luckily a different one than where you worked. He flagged down the bartender, you placed your order, and then it was time to actually talk to this guy.

"I'm really glad my roommate works with you and was able to set this up," Shawn said.

Another smile from you. "Me too, always nice to have people looking out for you," you agreed. A few seconds later, your drink was in front of you and you had something to sip on. "So, are you from here?"

The small talk continued. You were pretty good at first dates by now, considering you've had a few. They never seem to work out, and you knew exactly why. You always seemed "too depressing" after they asked you all of the questions that had depressing answers.

Tonight seemed to be going well, as you had Shawn talking a lot and only had to answer easy, happy questions, like about how long you'd been working at the Wildfire Bar. Easy, good ice breakers.

However, it always goes south too fast because all the depressing stuff in your life happened to be related to every "get to know you question."

"So, are you from around here?" Shawn asked. Poor Shawn, unknowing to what he just opened.

See, you could just lie, but you never want to build anything off of lies.

You contain your grimace and shake your head. "Uh, no, actually, I'm from out of the country."

Shawn lit up. "Woah, really? Where from then?" Poor, poor Shawn.

"Uh, Sokovia? I don't know if you've heard of it, it's pretty small," you said, hoping to move on.

They never do. "I have actually, yeah! Why'd you come to the US?" He looked so intrigued.

You cleared your throat. "Well, I was in an orphanage and they sent me here to join the foster system since my chances were higher. Not by a lot, but they were higher."

Shawn looked very awkward all of a sudden. "Oh no, what happened to your parents?"

"They- well, our house was bombed. I was the only one in my family who survived."

"Family? Do you- did you have siblings?" The quick correction was awkward, and you saw the look of "please kill me" flash across Shawn's face.

You nodded. "Yeah, I was actually a triplet, but, uh, not anymore," you said, trying to laugh it off at the end.

Shawn didn't say anything, he just looked at you with horror. You took a long drink before setting your glass back down on the bar. "Welp, this was fun while it lasted. Sorry, Shawn," you said. You stood up from the barstool, gave Shawn a small pat on the shoulder, and left.

The next day at work, your coworker sighed. "Seriously, (Y/n)? You left?"

"What was I supposed to do?" you asked, throwing your arms up. "I'm not gonna lie to the guy! I don't mean to get all sad and depressing it just- it just happens because my life is sad and depressing."

Your coworker, Gus, laughed. "You might need to find creative ways to truthfully answer the question, or at least say you don't wanna talk about it until the fourth or fifth date!"

Despite the topic, you were smiling as you shook your head. "You know what, Gus? I-"

"Hey! It's the Avengers!"

You and Gus turned to look at the TV the man was pointing to. You read the scrolling headline and gasped.

"Turn the volume on."
