Chapter 96

It's 6 weeks later and Meredith is getting ready to be discharged. She has been really well and is back to a healthy weight. Once she was eating 100% for a week Dr Bailey took out her NG tube. Meredith told her herself to just keep eating so she could get better. It was a hard battle but she did it.

Meredith is in her hospital room putting her belongings into her suitcase. She's waiting on Dr Bailey to come in with her discharge papers and then Derek to come pick her up.

Dr Bailey walks in a few minutes later with her discharge papers in her hand.

"Good morning Meredith! Excited to be getting out of here?" Bailey asked, smiling at her.

"I'm so ready. I can't wait to sleep in my own bed again." Meredith said smiling.

"I bet! That'll be nice. Now here are your discharge papers. I just need you to sign these and then you'll be free to go!" Bailey hands her the papers and Meredith signs them and gives them back. "Are you excited to be coming back to work next week? It sounds early but I agree with Dr Wyatt saying it'll be a good distraction for you."

"I'm so excited! I can't wait to get back into the OR! That'll be a really good distraction for me!"

"And I will make sure you take time to have have your meals and snacks during your shift. We can't have you slipping backwards."

Meredith nods. "I won't! I think I can do it this time. I feel good."

"Glad to hear it Grey. Now when is McDreamy coming to pick you up?"

"He should be here any minute." Meredith picks up Dr Bear. "He says he has a surprise for me."

Derek walks in at that moment. "Hey Mer, hey Bailey!" He goes and gives Meredith a big hug and gives her a kiss. "I'm so proud of you Meredith Grey."

Meredith blushes. "Thanks."

"Okay we'll I'll let you two get out of here. Derek she's dying to get home so I'm kicking you guys out now." Dr Bailey smiles.

Meredith smiles and then frowns.

"What is it Grey? You okay?" Bailey asks.

"I'm just worried. Do you think I can do it? And not relapse again? I'm just scared I'll relapse again." Meredith hugs Dr Bear to her chest.

"I know you can do it. You've shown us how strong you are and how hard you work to get what you want. I have no doubt in my mind that you've kicked your anorexia's butt Grey." Bailey says to her. "Neither one of you tell anyone what I'm about to do. I'll deny it if you do." Bailey walks over to Meredith and gives her a big hug. "I'm so proud of you Grey. Now get out of here and don't come back till next week!"

Meredith giggles and her and Derek leave after they tell Dr Bailey bye.

They drive home and Meredith smiles at Derek. "So what's my surprise?"

"I'll tell you when we get home."

"Okayyyyyy." Meredith says and fake pouts.

They get home a few minutes later and go inside.

"Stay here. Don't move." He tells her and runs off. He comes back a minute later with a post it note in his hand. "Meredith Grey I have a question for you."

"What?"

"Will you marry me?"

"Yes! Yes! Yes!" Meredith yells. "I love you so much. What's the post it note for?"

"I want us to make some promises to each other."

"Okay!" Meredith says smiling.

"What do we want to promise each other?" Derek asks.

"That you'll love me even when you hate me." Meredith says.

Derek writes it down. "To love each other even when we hate each other... no running. Ever. Nobody walks out, no matter what happens."

"No running."

"What else?" Derek asks.

"That we'll take care of each other even when we're old and smelly and senile and and if I get Alzheimer's and forget you."

"I will remind you of who I am everyday... to take care when old, smelly, senile. This is forever."

They smile at each other and Derek gives Meredith a kiss. "I love you so much Meredith Grey."

"I love you so much Derek Shepherd. And I always will."

A few hours later it's lunchtime and Derek is preparing lunch for Meredith. She is feeling super anxious since it's her first meal back home.

"Hey Mer, lunch is ready." Derek calls.

"Okay." Meredith says nervously. She is feeling super nervous so she brings Dr Bear with her and sits him on her lap.

"I'm nervous. I don't know if I can do this." She says softly.

"You can do it. I know you can. I'm here for you." Derek takes her hand. "You are so strong. I'm right here if you need anything."

Meredith stands up with Dr Bear in her arms.

"Mer where are you going? You need to eat. I know it's hard but you can do it. Don't run from your fear."

"I'm not running. I'm just putting Dr Bear on the couch. I don't think I need him to eat anymore." Meredith walks over to the couch and sets him down. She comes back to the table and sits down and starts eating.

She finishes her food a little bit later. She looks up at Derek and flashes him a giant smile. "I did it Derek!"

"You did! I'm so proud of you Meredith Grey!"
