Sick and Tired

Chapter 59

Meredith was being wheeled up to her hospital room. She's sleeping as she's being brought up to her room. They gave her pretty strong meds which knocked her out cold. Bailey and Derek are going up to Meredith's room with her.

"I just don't get it. Why on earth was she running around the hospital?! She knows that's not a smart decision. That's so not safe for her and for patients and other doctors." Derek said softly as they walked towards Meredith's room.

"I know." Bailey sighed. "She's been pretty reckless with her safety lately. I've noticed several times over the past few weeks when she's being exhibiting reckless behavior. She's not using eating disorder behaviors right now but she's still not using safe behaviors." Bailey said.

They got to the room and they get Meredith all situated in her bed.

"Poor thing is in so much pain right now. Even after we gave her the initial pain meds. I wonder if she has another injury that's gone unnoticed. I'm going to schedule an MRI so we can take a closer look." She gets up and starts to walk out of the room. "If she wakes up and is still in a lot of pain we can switch her over to a morphine pump so she can control it herself." She leaves the room after Derek nods.

Callie walks in. "Hey Derek. How's she doing? How's her pain?"

Derek sighs. "Hey Callie. She's been sleeping so I'm unsure. I know she was in a lot of pain earlier so they gave her some strong meds which knocked her out. Bailey said if she wakes up and is still in a lot of pain we can switch to a morphine pump."

Callie nods. "Yes I was just talking to her about that. Let's get her up to radiology so we can do the MRI."

They wheel Meredith, who is still sleeping, up to radiology. They get her all situated in the MRI. Halfway through Meredith wakes up not knowing where she is and starts to cry from the pain.

"Derek? Where are you???" She starts to move around in the MRI machine.

"Hey Mer, I need you to lie still. You're having an MRI done. It's okay! You're going to be just fine." Callie says through the speaker. "Derek is right next to me."

"Hey Mer. You're fine sweetie. You're almost done. Just lay still for us okay?" Derek says. He can hear her whimpers and knows she's scared and in pain.

They try talking to her the rest of the time she is in the machine but all she can do is whimper as she's in a lot of pain.

"Derek, I think we need to get her that pain pump. She shouldn't be in this much pain." Callie says to Derek.

"I know. I'll get Bailey to order it. It kills me to see her in this much pain."

The MRI machine stops and they get out to get Meredith back on the gurney. They enter the room and press the button to have Meredith exit the MRI. The table slides out with her on it. They see her face is covered with tears.

"Derek I hurt. Make it stop. Please." She says reaching out for him. He holds her hand once she's back on the gurney.

"I know sweetie. We're going to get you a morphine pump. That's going to help you."

All he gets in response is whimpers from Meredith.

Callie had gone back into the little room to look over the results. "Hey Derek? Can you come here please? I need to show you something."

He nods. "Mer, I'll be right back." She doesn't let go of his hand. "Mer, I promise. I need to go see what Callie needs to show me. Give me two minutes."

Eventually she allows him to go and just lays on the gurney and whimpers in pain.

Callie shows Derek the results of the MRI. "Meredith has a torn ligament in her knee. It doesn't look too serious but it's definitely torn. This explains why she's in so much more pain than normal. She's got a broken leg and a torn ligament. We're just going to keep an eye on the torn knee ligament. I don't think she'll need surgery but we'll see. She's already going to need physical therapy once the cast is off so that will help with this also."

Derek shakes his head. "She really injured herself from this fall. Poor Mer."

"I know. Let's get her back to her room and get her situated and then get Bailey to order the pain pump and then I will get the cast on her. I'll page Bailey to meet us back at Mer's room."

They go to Meredith in the next room. "Ready to go back Mer?" She nods while crying.

They get her all situated in her bed when they get back. Bailey enters the room moments later. Callie tells her about the torn ligament in her knee. Bailey feels so bad for her poor intern.

Bailey walks over to Meredith laying in the bed and holds her hand. "Hey sweetie, how are you feeling?"

"It hurts Bailey. Make it stop. Please. I can't take the pain. It's too much." Meredith wails.

Bailey strokes the top of Meredith's head. "I know sweetie. I'm going to make you feel better. I'm going to give you this morphine pump and you can click this button and it'll give you more morphine. It'll only give you a set amount every so often when you press it. Once you've hit your max it'll stop giving you morphine for a while."

She gets the morphine pump ready and attaches it to Meredith. (I don't know how this works lmao just imagine all the medical stuff I've been saying for this is correct)

"Okay sweetie. You can click this and morphine will go into you and relieve you of the pain." Bailey says to Meredith.

Meredith is about to press the button when she notices Derek is missing from the room. "Wait where's Derek?" She says crying more.

Right at that moment Derek enters the room carrying Dr Bear.

"Derek! Dr Bear! There you guys are!"

Derek hands her the bear and she gives it a hug and presses the morphine pump button. Once she does so she falls asleep when the pain meds hit her system.

"Let's hope that helps her." Bailey says to Derek.
