(Rylie's POV)

It's the first day of summer, and Rylie is poring over an old book again early in the morning. Her room was a mess and not just her bedroom. Her study table was also full of books arranged in no particular order. Her mother came to the room and scowled at her. Particularly at the books on her study table.

"Hon. What are you doing again? It's the first day of summer. You should at least go out with your friends."

Rylie stopped and furrowed her eyebrow at her mom. "I don't need friends. I'm fine here."

Natasha exhaled the breath she was holding. Her daughter had been hell-bent on continuing her husband's archaeology findings and doesn't even have a social life. And it was even about a fictional monster that is only seen on t.v. Werewolves. Which she thinks is nonsense.

It was already dinner, and Rylie had been reading that old book since early in the morning that day. She even goes back to it even though Natasha told her not to!

"Pack your bag. This summer you are going home to your grandma's house. No more archaeology stuff."

"But mom! I---"

Mrs Scot didn't let her finish what she has to say. The old woman headed downstairs to get ready for their dinner while waving a hand at her. Mrs Scot briefly glances at the open book Rylie was reading. Shaking her head again.

Rylie scoffs. Her grandmother lives in a meadow, and there was nothing to see and nothing to do there. The farmhouse looks like a prison for her. Though she was always happy to see her grandmother. She doesn't want to visit because her grandma also insists that she stops digging her own grave by following her father's trail on archaeology.

Plus, her mom's disapproval of her passion only fuels her to do it more.

On the other hand, Rylie's eyes followed the open notebook she always put a note on. There was a headline about a totem found on Shasta mountain. That is oddly near her grandmother's house. She could go there by bus if she wants to.

A smile appeared on her lips. Agreeing on her mother's choice could be a good idea. It's like hitting two birds with one stone.

"Rylie. Let's eat dinner!"

"Coming, mom!" Rylie grumbled under her breath. It's gonna be a long day for sure.

---------------------

She already packed all the stuff she needs inside her travelling bag before heading down to join her mother.

Rylie went towards her mother in the kitchen to see what was inside the pot. She lifted the lid and looked inside. There was nothing there.

"What's for dinner, mom?"

"You guessed it!"

Rylie smiled despite herself. Her mom can be strict, but she was the sweetest woman Rylie had ever known her entire life. Since her father died, it was just the two of them surviving on their own. Though her grandmother sometimes gives her an allowance, it was her mom who she is constantly with.

She peeks at the cooked meal on the table. It was her favourite dish—Macaroni and cheese with a peach cobbler on the side.

A smile broke out on her lips. They may be at times arguing and fighting with each other, but her mom surely knows what she liked!

"Thank you, mom." Rylie leaned in to hug her mom. "You are the best."

Her mother smiled, looked at her face, and returned her hugs. "Rylie, I love you so much, so please don't do anything stupid at your grandma's house, ok?"
