Scene 8 – Friday – 5/13/2024

Jane stood by Cooper's car, heart pounding in her chest as she waited for him. When he got in the car, he reached over to unlock the passenger side door. She opened it, then reached around to unlock the back door and climbed in, refusing to sit beside him.

Cooper started the engine and headed down the narrow dirt path. "Jane ..." he began, glancing back at her. But she stubbornly stared out the window, watching the trees pass by in a slow blur behind her tears, biting her lip to stop the tears. It didn't work. Her eyes filled, and soon, tears streamed down her cheeks.

Cooper cleared his throat. "Janey ..."

"I don't want to talk to you." She snapped, sucking in a shaky breath. She bent over, covering her face with her hands as sobs wracked her body. "Why would you do this to me?" she cried. "I trusted you."

"Ja–" Cooper tried again.

Before he could finish, Jane yanked the door handle and bolted from the car. Cooper slammed on the brakes, but she was already running, her feet pounding the dirt.

Cooper staggered out of the car, "Jane, comeback!" he called after her, but Jane didn't slow her pace. Instead, she sped up, pushing through the pain of her lungs filling with frigid air.

"Jane, come back!" he shouted, staggering out of the car. But she didn't slow down. Instead, she ran faster, pushing through the pain of the cold air searing her lungs.

"Jane!" Cooper's voice darkened as he called after her again.

She heard the car door slam behind her and then the crunch of tires on dirt as he drove after her. Breathless, she slowed to a walk.

Cooper pulled up a few yards away and cut the engine. "You'll never be able to walk back to town," he said, his voice edged with frustration.

"I know that," she snapped, quickening her pace. But Cooper was right behind her, easily catching up.

Cooper grabbed Jane's arm, forcing her to face him. She shook her head, her voice trembling. "Don't touch me." She yanked her arm away.

"I meant every word I said, Jane. I love you." He reached for her again, but Jane whipped around and slapped him.

"I deserve that," he muttered.

Jane slapped him again, harder this time, but he didn't even flinch.

"I sorry, Jane." Cooper's voice was strained.

She pushed at his chest, tears spilling over as she hit him again. He remained unmoved.

"If I could take it all back, I would," Cooper said, stepping closer. "I love you."

"Stop lying to me!" She slapped him once more and shoved him with all her strength. "All you do it lie."

"Yell at me all you want. Hit me however much you need to. It won't change the fact that I fucking love everything about you." His eyes glistened with unshed tears, and Jane hated the pain in them.

"I hate you." Her voice wavered, betraying her hurt. She looked up at him, her bottom lip trembling as a sob escaped. "I hate you, but I hate it even more that I still love you. I hate how badly I want to go back to an hour ago and pretend none of this ever happened. I hate ..." Jane struggled to speak through her tears. "I hate ..." she sniffed, pointing at him. "I hate you. I hate you." She couldn't hold back her tears any longer and forced herself to walk away.

"If you keep walking, I'll follow you. All the way home if I have to, to make sure you're safe," Cooper called after her, but he didn't move.

Jane spun around. "Safety?" she shouted. "What are you going to do when Brittany jumps me at school for this, huh? Are you going to save me from that psychopath?"

"I'll deal with Brittany and do everything I can to stop that from happening," Cooper said, his voice pleading. "Please believe me."

"You know what?" Jane stepped back towards him. "I wish I never met you. I was perfectly fine all alone."

"And I would still love you," Cooper said his voice unwavering.

Jane's face crumpled as she shouted, "Stop saying that!" She lifted a trembling hand to her mouth to stifle her cry. "It isn't fair!"

Cooper straightened, struggling visibly with his own emotions. "I will never stop loving you, Janey."

Jane felt like she was about the throw up, the pain was that intense. Cooper took a few steps forward, reaching out for her, but she pulled away. "Don't touch me." She turned and walked further down the road, knowing full well she'd have to turn back at some point. It was nearly impossible for her to contain her emotions the further she got.

"If you want me to tell you I love you in front of the entire goddamn school, I'll do it," he called after her.

Jane made it a few more yards before collapsing to her knees, her face in her hands, allowing herself to cry out every ounce of pain he had caused.

Cooper was at her side in an instant, dropping to his knees. "Tell me what I need to do to fix this, and I'll do it."

"I don't think you can." Jane leaned into him, and he gathered her in his arms, letting her fall apart as she clung to him for support.

When her crying subsided, Cooper spoke softly, "Let me take you home."

And all Jane could do was give him a weak nod before standing, heading back to the car alone.
