The early morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow over Woo Do Hwan's apartment. Today was a significant day, one that brought a mix of excitement and anxiety. He lay in bed for a moment longer, gathering his thoughts, before rolling out and heading for the shower. The water cascaded over him, washing away the last remnants of sleep and steeling him for the day ahead.
After dressing in a simple, casual outfit, Do Hwan made his way to Sarang's room. Sarang was already awake, her large, expressive eyes following his every move. She was a child full of curiosity and wonder, with a smile that could light up the darkest of days.
Today was Sarang's first day at nursery. Do Hwan was both excited and anxious about this milestone. He wanted her to have a positive experience, to make friends, and to be well cared for by the staff. Yet, he couldn't shake the nervousness about how she would react to being left in a new environment and how other children would interact with given her having Down's syndrome, unique needs and the presence of her NG tube.
After taking a quick shower, Do Hwan dressed in casual yet presentable clothes, wanting to look his best for this important day. He then went to Sarang's room, where she was already awake, playing with her favorite stuffed animal.
"Good morning, sweetheart," he greeted her with a warm smile, picking her up gently. Sarang giggled and reached out to touch his face, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
"Appa," she mumbled, her speech still developing but filled with affection.
Do Hwan dressed her in the small, neatly pressed uniform he had laid out the night before. It was adorable, and seeing her in it made his heart swell with a mix of pride and bittersweet emotion. She looked so grown up.
"Are you ready for your big day?" he asked as he adjusted her collar. Sarang looked at him and gave a small smile as she nodded slowly.
In the kitchen, he prepared her morning feed, carefully administering it through her NG tube. Sarang sat patiently, accustomed to the routine. Once done, he fitted her ankle splints and slipped on her tiny shoes.
"You look perfect, Sarang. Let's take a picture" he said, grabbing his phone. He positioned her by the doorway and snapped a photo, capturing her in all her innocent beauty. "Beautiful. My brave girl."
He packed her backpack with all the essentials: extra clothes, her feed for lunchtime, a few toys, and her favorite blanket. They stepped outside, and he carefully placed Sarang in her car seat, securing her walking frame in the back of the car. As they drove to the nursery, Do Hwan's mind raced with last-minute worries and hopes.
Upon arriving at the nursery, a staff member greeted them warmly. "Good morning, Mr. Woo. This must be Sarang," she said with a friendly smile.
"Yes, this is Sarang," Do Hwan replied, lifting his daughter out of the car seat. Sarang clung to him tightly, her little arms wrapping around his neck. She buried her face in his chest, clearly sensing that something was different.
