Chapter 11: Sick

Sheng Wang had never been one for facebook. He found the whole process of starting a conversation, sending emojis, and exchanging pleasantries to be a bit of a hassle. So when he saw the "friend added successfully" notification on his phone at 1:23 a.m., he groaned and was about to return to his game. But something kept pulling him back to the facebook app.

A message from Jiang Tian popped up:

" Nag transfer ako ng pera sayo."

Sheng Wang blinked in confusion. He sat up and checked his ewallet, where he saw a small sum of money had indeed been transferred. "Why would Jiang Tian be sending me money in the middle of the night? " he wondered.

He typed back: "Wtf?"

The reply came quickly: " what? ''

Sheng Wang was puzzled. "Why are you sending me money now?"

Jiang Tian's message was straightforward: " for the water."

Sheng Wang's confusion deepened. "What water money?"

Jiang Tian clarified: "You put the water on my table."

Sheng Wang's brows furrowed. " para iyon lang? It's just a bottle of water. Do you really need to pay me back?"

Realizing it might be awkward to insist on such a small amount, Sheng Wang simply typed: "Oh."

He saw Jiang Tian typing, then pausing, and typing some more. Eventually, he received another message: "Um."

Sighing, Sheng Wang decided to put the phone down and try to sleep. He changed Jiang Tian's contact name from the cryptic punctuation mark to "Jiang Tian" and eventually drifted off.

The next morning, Sheng Wang woke up feeling dreadful. His head ached, his nose was stuffy, and he sneezed several times. Wrapped in a quilt, he reluctantly got out of bed and shuffled downstairs.

The house was unusually lively. Auntie San, the family's cheerful nanny, was in the kitchen with Aunt jiang '' lea '' . They were preparing breakfast, and Sheng Wang could hear Auntie San giving lea cooking tips.

Suddenly, there was a loud crash followed by lea's worried voice. "Oh no, hurry and wash it with cold water! It's really hot."

Auntie San rushed over with some ointment. "Apply this. It's very effective. I always used it for him when he was a child."

Jiang Tian, who had been putting his school stuff together, walked into the kitchen. Sheng Wang, still at the top of the stairs, could see the tension in his posture.

Jiang Tian's voice was curt. "Why do you want to learn from others?"

lea looked surprised, and Auntie San seemed a bit uncomfortable. Jiang Tian shook his head and said, "Forget it. I'm going to school."

He picked up his schoolbag and glanced up at Sheng Wang. For a moment, their eyes met, but Jiang Tian quickly looked away and headed out the door.

Sheng Wang felt a twinge of discomfort as he descended the stairs. The weather outside was a mix of cloudy skies and distant rumbles of thunder. He rubbed his nose, which felt even more stuffed in the chilly air. As he made his way to the kitchen, he resolved to face the day despite feeling under the weather.

He couldn't shake off the odd feeling from the morning, but he was determined to carry on, one sneeze at a time.
