Chapter 26: Get Out
The bell rang, signaling the end of the exam. The invigilator began collecting papers, and when he reached Sheng Wang's, he paused, likely intrigued by the latecomer.
"Baka naman piliin mo na lang lahat ng C's. Hindi bababa sa gusto mong makakuha ng ilang mga puntos na paraan. Kung sa huli ay wala ka, huwag kang darating na umiiyak," the invigilator commented, shaking his head.
Sheng Wang, unfazed, responded, "Teacher, do you teach English?"
"No, I teach geography," replied the invigilator.
"Then you haven't seen the standard answers for this paper, right?"
"No," the invigilator said, puzzled.
Sheng Wang nodded, "Good."
The invigilator, clearly taken aback, could only stare as Sheng Wang walked away. Students at the front tables tried to stifle their laughter, feeling the tension.
The invigilator, frowning, said, "Kahit ano pa ang mangyari, huwag kang magpahuli sa susunod na exam. Maging responsable sa iyong sarili at huwag hayaang makaapekto sa iyo ang isang maliit na problema."
Sheng Wang simply said, ' thank you, teacher."
As the other classrooms finished and students streamed out into the corridor, ben and Jiang Tian were waiting by the stairs. They were on the lookout for Sheng Wang.
"Where is he?" Jiang Tian asked, scanning Class 2.
Ben shrugged. "I don't know. Their class is slow with collecting papers, and the door hasn't opened yet."
Just then, the door to Class 2 swung open. Students poured out, chatting animatedly.
"I heard he's great at English but messed up today."
"He was perfect last week, right? Scored 117 or 118?"
"Yeah, but he's probably dropped by 20 points this time."
"Hindi mo ba narinig Sabi ng invigilator, dapat pinili na lang niya lahat ng C's. Parang nahirapan talaga siya."
Ben whispered to Jiang Tian, "The more I hear, the more confused I am."
They approached a classmate who seemed to know more. "Who dropped 20 points?" Jiang Tian asked.
"Oh, Jiang Shen! Brother Yang!" the student greeted.
Ben pressed for details. "Who are you talking about?"
"The guy who was late for the English test. He missed the listening section entirely."
"Late?" Ben was surprised. "Sheng Wang was late this morning?"
"No," Jiang Tian said. "I was there at 7 o'clock."
The student was perplexed, but with Jiang Tian's confirmation, he quickly left with his friends.
Ben looked incredulous. "Sheng Wang is usually the best at English. How could he mess up like this?"
Jiang Tian, noticing Sheng Wang's somber mood through the classroom window, suggested, "Let's go ask him."
Ben, unsure but compliant, followed Jiang Tian into the classroom.
"Brother Sheng!" Ben called out loudly, startling the few students still inside.
Sheng Wang was packing his school uniform into his bag. When he saw them, he finished closing the zipper and prepared to leave.
Ben, with a touch of dramatic flair, asked, "Brother Sheng, what happened this morning?"
Jiang Tian entered the room, his eyes fixed on Sheng Wang, waiting for his response.
Sheng Wang, looking resigned, said, "Forget it."
This reaction amused Sheng Wang, and his earlier frustration melted away. He laughed, feeling lighter despite the morning's troubles.
"Let's go," Sheng Wang said, tossing his bag over his shoulder. "Gutom na gutom na ako. Umalis na tayo dito."
They headed to the cafeteria, where most students had already seated themselves. There were only a few empty spots left.
andy, jr, and kyle waved them over to a table.
Ben quickly got his food and joined them. Sheng Wang sat down, and andy asked, "I heard you missed the listening section this morning. What happened?"
Ben added, "We're asking him."
Sheng Wang picked at his food, avoiding the question. "Someone messed up my plans. I was supposed to pick up practice papers but ended up stuck in a mess outside the school."
"Who did this?" Ben asked.
"I don't know," Sheng Wang said, picking pieces of green pepper from his plate. "They must have been loitering around outside the school."
"What happened after?" Qi Jiahao asked.
"I couldn't get the papers. I came back as quickly as I could," Sheng Wang explained, showing the mud stains on his school uniform.
Andy suggested, "You should be more careful. Maybe next time just ask for help if you need it."
Jr offered, "I'll check with my dad to see if he can help."
"No need," Sheng Wang said, shaking his head. "Ayoko na siyang isali. Besides, paano natin mapapatunayan kung sino ang gumawa nito. "
"Maybe the surveillance footage can help," Jr said.
They talked and ate, and Sheng Wang's mood lightened as he enjoyed the company.
Later, Jiang Tian walked past the convenience store Joy, and Boss Ryan asked him why he was there instead of taking the exam.
Jiang Tian, grabbing a bottle of ice water and a box of Band-Aids, inquired about the store's surveillance footage.
"I need footage from 6-8 this morning," Jiang Tian said.
"Why?" Boss Ryan asked, puzzled.
"Just looking for someone," Jiang Tian replied.
In the evening, Sheng Wang heard from andy and Ben that Jr's barbecue restaurant had apprehended two troublemakers who had been causing issues. The thugs had been caught on the convenience store's camera, confirming Sheng Wang's earlier suspicions.
