Chapter 37: Residency

The sun was just beginning to set, casting a warm glow over the residential area outside the phoenix tree. The newly painted building stood out with its fresh, vibrant colors, a stark contrast to the old, worn-out houses scattered around it. Among them was Old Man's place, which, though slightly dilapidated, was once a hub of activity and cheer.

Years ago, Old Man was a spry and energetic figure, known for his love of flowers and his loyal raccoon cat, When Jiang Tian was just a boy, he would often find himself face-to-face with the soft, mischievous cat, much to Old Man's amusement.

"Hey, kid!" Old Man would call out, seeing Jiang Tian stumble as a cat made a soft landing on his shoes. "Come on in! I've got some wontons for you."

Jiang Tian, usually too shy to refuse, would be pulled into the yard with a warm smile and a plate of food. Despite his stubbornness about having eaten already, he would sit quietly and enjoy Old Man's simple, heartfelt meals.

One evening, Old Man noticed Jiang Tian standing outside the wall, looking forlorn. The little boy, wrapped in his school uniform, was fiddling with his key rope and seemed lost in thought.

"Have you eaten yet?" Old Man asked gently, placing a hand on Jiang Tian's shoulder.

Jiang Tian hesitated for a moment before nodding, "Yes, I've eaten."

The old man, always perceptive, could see through the boy's forced smile. "It's late, and the night air's getting cool. Come in, let's have some tea."

But Jiang Tian wasn't just seeking food. "Grandpa, can I see the cats?"

Old Man's heart ached a little. He knew Jiang Tian's family situation wasn't easy. "Of course,. You know, Chief isn't here anymore, but I'm sure you'll find some company."

As Sheng Wang listened to Old Man's stories, he felt a pang of sadness for Jiang Tian. The boy's past was full of challenges—his mother's struggles, the instability of his early years, and the eventual separation from his father.

"hindi mo ba alam?" Old Man continued, his eyes clouded with memories. "Xiao Tian's mother worked so hard to make things right. She sacrificed a lot, and even after the divorce, she tried to make a good life for him."

Sheng Wang nodded thoughtfully. "I understand now why Jiang Tian might feel like he doesn't belong. It sounds like he's had a rough time finding a place he can call home."

"Yes," Old Man agreed. "And sometimes, when he seems distant, it's because he's still searching for that feeling of home."

As Sheng Wang prepared to leave, his phone buzzed with a message from his class monitor. "You'd better get back to school," the message read. "Don't forget about the lunch break rules!"

Sheng Wang hurried outside, but paused when he saw Jiang Tian walking past the mingdao Building. A wild cat darted through the flowers, and Jiang Tian stopped to watch it, a fleeting smile on his face.

Feeling a sudden urge to offer Jiang Tian some stability, Sheng Wang rushed up to him. "Jiang Tian!"

Jiang Tian turned in surprise. "Sheng Wang? Bakit ka sumisigaw?"

" nag iisip lang ako," Sheng Wang said with a hopeful grin, "How about we live on campus together? I know it's not the same as home, but it might give us both a bit more stability."

Jiang Tian looked at Sheng Wang, the weight of his past and present mingling in his eyes. A genuine smile began to form. "alam mo na, that might be exactly what I need."

The two friends walked back towards the school, the quiet evening settling around them. As they headed in, the cat from earlier disappeared into the shadows, leaving behind a sense of newfound companionship and understanding between Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian.

And so, amidst the ordinary rhythm of school life, they found a small but significant piece of stability together, one step closer to feeling truly at home.
