Chapter 18: Check Homework

That night, Sheng Wang passed out in bed after a heavy night of drinking. Morning came early, and he jolted awake to his phone blinking: 6:00 AM. With a groan, he wondered, "Why do people drink so much?" Last night had left him with a hangover and a cringe-worthy memory of what he'd said to Jiang Tian.

He tried to go back to sleep, but his phone buzzed with a bank notification: his dad had sent him money. Sheng Wang blinked at the message and then noticed a new chat from his father on facebook:

Dad: "The weather's been crazy lately son. Stay warm, and remember to eat breakfast!"

Sheng Wang, feeling both guilty and hungover, responded:

Sheng Wang: "ba't ang aga mo naman ata nagpadala ng pera dad?"

Dad: "Just thought of it. Up early today?"

Sheng Wang: "Trying to be productive."

Dad: "Good. Don't forget breakfast."

Sheng Wang: "opo."

Inspired by his dad's message, Sheng Wang decided to sneak out early and avoid the awkwardness of running into anyone. He leaped out of bed, took a quick shower, and grabbed his school uniform and bag.

As he reached for the doorknob, he noticed a plastic bag of medicine beside his pillow. After a brief hesitation, he stuffed it into his bag.

But as soon as he opened the door, there stood Jiang Tian with his school bag. Sheng Wang froze. Panic set in, and he scrambled back behind the door, praying Jiang Tian wouldn't notice.

Jiang Tian knocked.

Jiang Tian: "Are you okay?"

Sheng Wang panicked and texted:

Sheng Wang: "Stomach issues."

Jiang Tian: "..."

Sheng Wang hoped Jiang Tian bought the excuse. He quickly went into the bathroom and flushed the toilet to make his excuse seem more believable. Once Jiang Tian's footsteps faded, Sheng Wang slipped downstairs.

He was greeted by lea, who asked, "Sheng Wang, do you need any medicine? I heard you might not be feeling well."

Sheng Wang, feeling embarrassed, nodded. "Yes, I'm okay po. Just a bit of a stomach ache."

"Have some porridge before you go," lea said kindly.

Grateful but still uneasy, Sheng Wang sat down at the table. Lea served him a steaming bowl of porridge.

"Thank you, Auntie," he said softly.

Lea smiled. "Think of me as a neighbor. Your dad asked me to look after you while he's away."

Sheng Wang appreciated her kindness. As he finished his breakfast, lea reminded him, " yung anak kong si Jiang Tian iniintay ka sa labas.."

Sheng Wang's eyes widened. " p-po?" tumango lang ang babae.

Oo nga. Jiang Tian was indeed waiting by the door, his backpack slung over one shoulder. Sheng Wang hurried to join him, feeling a mix of relief and dread.

'' at last.. '' wika ni jiang tian bago kami umalis.

The drive to school was quiet. Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian sat in the back seat, both lost in their thoughts. Sheng Wang couldn't help but notice how Jiang Tian seemed to be in his own world, reading a newspaper on his phone.

As they arrived at school, Sheng Wang felt the usual buzz of the classroom was missing. When he entered, he saw mrs. sarah , their English teacher, standing in the aisle. The classroom was eerily quiet.

ben, sitting nearby, whispered, "She's here to check homework. I didn't do mine."

Sheng Wang's heart sank. He hadn't done his homework either. When reached Sheng Wang's desk and saw his blank paper, she sighed.

"Sheng Wang," she said sternly, "you didn't do your homework. Take this paper, a pen, and stand outside until you're done."

Sheng Wang, feeling the weight of her disappointment, took the paper and went outside. Just as he settled into his spot, he noticed Jiang Tian coming out with his own blank paper. It seemed like Jiang Tian was joining him in standing outside.

'' oh? Ikaw din? '' tinignan lang ako ng masama ni jiang tian at tila pina aalala sakin ang nangyari kagabi. Natameme ako bigla.

'' so...do you remember now? '' he smirked saka nagsagot na sa kanyang papel. Lahat kaming hindi Nakagawa ay nakatayo sa corridor.

Sheng Wang gave a small, appreciative nod. They stood side by side, both feeling the sting of their oversight but finding some comfort in not being alone.

As the morning sun brightened the sky, Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian faced their punishment together, sharing a silent camaraderie. Sometimes, facing the consequences with a friend made everything a little bit easier.
