Chapter 14: Collusion
The rain poured relentlessly, transforming the corridor floor into a slippery mess. Students who had been lingering outside quickly retreated indoors, leaving Sheng Wang feeling like the new kid at a bustling zoo.
At the front of the room, ben was holding court, his voice booming over the chatter. "100 questions, and you're still human? Dang. Grabe ka talaga pareng sheng wang. " he teased, his tone half-joking, half-serious.
A student from the crowd groaned, "I'm aiming for less than ten mistakes. If I mess up more, katapusan ko na!"
"Ten mistakes? You're aiming high! I'd be thrilled with fewer than twenty," another student chimed in.
"Give it a rest!" someone else shouted.
Ben laughed. "The world's been suffering long enough. If English were out of the entrance exams, baka sa international school na ako nag aaral... ''
"Yeah, keep dreaming!" came the playful retort.
dave, the school committee member, squeezed through the crowd. "Hey, Sheng Wang, we need to chat," he said, his voice tinged with frustration.
Sheng Wang, sneezing and pulling out a tissue, looked puzzled. "What's up?"
Dave trying not to smile, said, "I wasn't scolding you. Just mentioned the new student—called you that to get a reaction."
Sheng Wang laughed. "Unique idea. Can it be changed?"
"Sure, I'll switch it," dave agreed.
Ben grinning, added, "Just call me."
"Forget it, you're not helping," dave retorted, amused.
"Why do you get called that?"
Sheng Wang's laughter grew. "Sorry, too late for changes now. You'll have to live with it."
"Brother Sheng, are you the top dog here?" Song Sirui asked with a grin.
Sheng Wang, sipping his water, said, "I'm just floating like you."
Song Sirui explained, "In Class A, the best grades make the best leaders. So, the guy behind you, no crying allowed."
Sheng Wang nodded, though his gaze wandered to the empty desk in the back. Jiang Tian had been missing for over twenty minutes since the break.
"Where's Jiang Tian?" dave asked, noticing Sheng Wang's distraction.
Sheng Wang shrugged. " malay ko..."
Dave leaned in, speaking seriously. "Don't give your papers to ben next time. The head teacher wants me to report any cheating. Got it?"
Ben , smirking, said, "So you keep a notebook of reports?"
"Exactly," dave confirmed. "I report quarterly. Wait and see."
As the conversation continued, Sheng Wang struggled to focus. Feeling unwell, he played a game on his phone, trying to distract himself from the cold and the day's events.
Just then, Jiang Tian appeared, carrying an umbrella and a white plastic bag with the infirmary logo. Water dripped from his umbrella, forming a small puddle on the floor.
ben noticed first. "Where have you been, Brother Tian? Out in this rain?"
Jiang Tian set the umbrella down and replied, "Went to the infirmary."
Sheng Wang looked up, confused. "Infirmary? Why? May sakit ka?"
Jiang Tian held up the plastic bag. "My mother burned her hands this morning. Got some ointment for her."
Sheng Wang's initial suspicions faded as he saw the two small dark green jars in the bag. He relaxed, realizing it wasn't as dramatic as he'd thought.
Jiang Tian turned to go back to his seat. As their eyes met, Sheng Wang quickly looked away, returning to his game. The room seemed quieter, and Sheng Wang's mood worsened. He turned off his phone and stuffed it into his bag.
As the evening study period ended and the classroom emptied, ben approached Sheng Wang. "Got any plans tonight?"
"Just more studying," Sheng Wang replied.
"Forget that. My brother opened a barbecue place. It's opening night, and we're going. You in?" ben invited.
Sheng Wang, feeling cold and a bit off, hesitated. "Okay, I'll go. Who else is coming?"
Ben listed off names: "The committee, the monitor, kyle, wayu, dave,..... ''
Sheng Wang chuckled. "Sounds like you're organizing a big group."
dave, overhearing, asked, " kasama pala ako?"
"Yeah, let's go. We'll wait for the others," ben said.
As they prepared to leave, Sheng Wang noticed Jiang Tian's empty seat and asked ben, " hindi ba kasama si Jiang Tian?"
Ben shook his head. "Not really. He's too busy and doesn't usually join these things."
Sheng Wang nodded, understanding. He pulled out his phone to send a quick message. A blue dot on facebook app caught his eye—messages from Jiang Tian.
Jiang Tian's message read: "I'll be back later today. If anyone asks, just say I'm busy with class."
Sheng Wang's thoughts swirled. He glanced at ben , who was chatting away. With a sigh, Sheng Wang pocketed his phone, ready for the night's outing but still curious about Jiang Tian's mysterious activities.
