A Certain Someone
Chapter 84: False Alarm

For students engulfed in daily exams, with their lives revolving around dormitories, canteens, and classrooms, festivals and holidays were the highlights of the year. The familiar rhythm of school life, marked by sports meets and art festivals, dictated their time. Sheng Wang had yet to develop such a reflex.

He lay on Jiang Tian's bed, barely stirring. The first rays of the sun brought him to check his phone, where December 31 flashed on the screen.

"Are you up?" Jiang Tian's voice cut through the morning haze.

"No," Sheng Wang mumbled, dropping the phone as Chen slightly, making room for himself and Jiang Tian on the narrow bed. "Tomorrow is New Year's Day, isn't it?"

He half-buried himself under the quilt, reluctant to move, and murmured, "This past half-year feels longer than all the years I've lived combined."

Jiang Tian, already half-awake, asked, "Why do you feel that way?"

Sheng Wang's eyes were still closed. "I don't remember much from before. Days pass in a blur. But now, I remember things vividly—how we met, how I grew to like you, and how we ended up together. It feels like I'm holding onto precious memories, not wanting to let any of them slip away."

Jiang Tian, his hand numb but unwilling to complain, closed his eyes again, pretending to be asleep.

Sheng Wang chuckled softly, adding, "Maybe it's just a second wave of adolescence or something. Better for brain and memory."

Jiang Tian's snicker cut through the morning quiet. "Are you making fun of me?"

Sheng Wang, slightly flustered and with messy hair, looked at him with a mock-serious face. "Me? No way."

He mischievously poked Jiang Tian's side, causing him to shift and grab Sheng Wang's wrist. "Stop it," Jiang Tian said, his face betraying a mix of surprise and amusement.

''ayoko nga. ''

Sheng Wang laughed and rolled out of bed, making a quick escape to the washbasin. "Good morning, little brother," he said with a cheeky grin.

His playful greeting earned him a broken lower lip later as he went out.

The school was eerily quiet, as the holiday season brought a sense of desolation. The 7 Eleven was closed, and the mobile food stalls had significantly reduced.

Jiang Tian had a task at the Gate, so they wandered through the streets until they found a quaint little shop named "Le Blanc for breakfast. The shop's name wasn't on any food apps, typical of such small, local places.

"You know about this place?" Sheng Wang asked, sitting down and browsing the simple menu.

"The old man used to come here for peanuts and wine," Jiang Tian explained.

"Did Gio come here for peanuts?" Sheng Wang teased. "The old man's in good shape, and the peanuts must be delicious."

Jiang Tian shook his head. "You're not serious. He was competitive and stubborn, but lost to a retired teacher."

"Was he upset?"

"Yeah, he quit drinking out of frustration."

Sheng Wang was taken aback. "That's quite something."

The old lady soon arrived with two bowls of vermicelli soup. Sheng Wang, who was feeling the cold, appreciated the warmth from the soup. He asked casually, "Did the old man seem anxious? Did he talk about things that kept him up at night?"

Jiang Tian's gaze sharpened slightly. "He said he could only sleep a few hours during the day while watching TV, but struggled at night."

Sheng Wang relaxed and enjoyed his meal, though he couldn't shake off the lingering feeling of unease. Kyle's arrival disrupted his thoughts.

"Brother kyle," Sheng Wang greeted when he saw Kyle walk in.

Kyle took a puff from his cigarette before disposing of it. "Out early for breakfast?"

"He had errands at the Gate," Sheng Wang replied. "I joined him."

"Ah, I'm off to see Brother Chu later," Kyle said. "I'll be in Taiwan with Liza soon."

"Vacation?" Sheng Wang inquired.

"Work," Kyle clarified, adding, "The barbecue restaurant is still open, but not for us."

Sheng Wang noticed Kyle's tired appearance. "Haven't been sleeping well?"

Kyle rubbed his eyes. "It's been tough with Comrade Lao Zhao not doing well. We've been running around and barely sleeping."

Sheng Wang nodded, feeling a pang of sympathy. Kyle handed him a scarf, "Wear this. You're looking cold."

Sheng Wang took the scarf with a touch of annoyance. As he looked in the glass, he noticed traces of Jiang Tian's handiwork from earlier, making him uneasy.

Jiang Tian returned downstairs with Sheng Wang, who wrapped the scarf around his neck. "Where did you get this?"

"Kyle gave it to me," Sheng Wang explained. "Said I looked cold."

They went to a nearby movie theater to kill time. The film wasn't engaging, and Sheng Wang found himself distracted, scrolling through social media. Clark's posts about the art festival caught his eye.

Sheng Wang messaged Clark, who explained that he and Aunt Lea hadn't attended the festival but had seen videos online. The conversation turned to an unexpected topic: a shirt that seemed to be Sheng Wang's.

Sheng Wang was momentarily alarmed but reassured by Clark's casual explanation. He decided not to mention this to Jiang Tian, wanting to avoid stirring any unnecessary worries.

However, a conversation in their festival group about a missing item in the auditorium had Sheng Wang's anxiety levels rising. Jr's involvement in adjusting the auditorium's monitoring made Sheng Wang uneasy, fearing their private moments might be discovered.

A week later, Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian were called to the Office. Instead of facing Jr, they were met with Sir Vince, who enthusiastically presented them with certificates for winning a national English competition. The overwhelming relief from avoiding a potentially disastrous situation left Sheng Wang feeling both elated and drained.

Jiang Tian, amused by Sheng Wang's over-the-top reaction, helped him down the stairs, while Sir Vince proudly showed off their certificates, sealing their victory on the wall of honor.
