Chapter 111: Human Room

Despite the occasional bouts of confusion and a rather hunched back, the old man remains as spirited as ever. His booming voice and fierce demeanor haven't faded a bit. His evenings revolve around the TV, flipping between military updates, the news, and agricultural shows. If he ever spots another rooftop invader like Ben, he'll be the first to grab a broom and fend them off with gusto.

Originally, Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian had planned to cook, but the moment they washed their hands, the old man shooed them out of the kitchen like errant ducklings. "What are you two doing here? Stay out!"

"I'm actually pretty good at cooking," Sheng Wang protested, attempting to show his skills. "If you don't believe me, let me give it a try."

"Out!" the old man commanded, his patience thin. "Bring me a pot of dumplings when you're done if you want to eat."

Sheng Wang jabbed a finger at his brother with a grin. "I'll take care of it, and I'll be eating my own dumplings."

Jiang Tian added, "And I'll be here too."

The old man shot a look of disbelief. "Except for Dave. Tian, who will look after you two?"

With a smirk, Sheng Wang draped an arm around Jiang Tian's shoulders and leaned against the kitchen door. The old man, with a dramatic flourish, waved a kitchen knife and called the mute who had just walked in.

Over the years, every time Sheng Wang returned to his hometown, he'd pass by Home. The old man and the boss of 7-Eleven, Boss Ryan, were always absent, leaving Sheng Wang to worry that life for his mute friend might be getting lonely. He later learned from Kyle that his parents had struggled to stay in Philippines, frequently finding themselves back in Jiangsu due to the loneliness and their deep connection to their hometown.

Hearing that, Sheng Wang realized that human connections run deeper than they often appear.

Lately, the mute had been overjoyed. All the familiar faces from the neighborhood had returned, filling the place with the buzz of the New Year. He had been busy packing longan and candied dates, and on the 30th day of the New Year, he brought back two big bags—one for the old man and one for Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian.

Despite not being huge fans of sweet treats, Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian were touched. For the older generation, a sweet New Year is a wish for a sweet future.

Their gift-giving wasn't quite on the mark, so they settled on buying supplements for the elders, hoping for longevity. But before dinner, they had a change of heart and went to the nearest mall, purchasing two smartphones designed for seniors.
