Chapter 38: HONEY WATER

The night was deep and restless. Sheng Wang sat in his dimly lit room, his phone buzzing incessantly with messages from his father, Clark. It was already past 1:00 a.m., and the incessant notifications from " Encyclopedia" made it hard for him to focus.

Sheng Wang sighed, plugging in his earphones and scrolling through the dozen or so voice messages. Despite his best efforts to ignore them, he knew exactly what his father was going to say from just the first few words.

"Something must have made my son unhappy..."

"Dad?"

"Don't be bored, just tell me."

The pattern was always the same. Clark was a man of gentle strength, his stubbornness wrapped in well-meaning advice. He believed that Sheng Wang's choice of accommodation must be a result of unhappiness, even though Sheng Wang had insisted otherwise. The nagging was relentless, and it seemed that no matter how many times he said he wasn't angry, his father's concern didn't waver.

With a frustrated huff, Sheng Wang finally recorded a voice message himself. "I'm not angry. I just need you to listen to me for once. "Sabi ko na hindi ko kailangan ng bagong miyembro ng pamilya. Ayos lang na mag-isa ako. Palagi kang busy, at kaya ok lang sa akin na mag hintay. Pero ngayon, nandito na si aunt lea, nakatira sa parehong lugar kung saan dati ang nanay ko."

He paused, his voice trembling slightly. "Nang nagkasakit ako, ginawan niya ako ng honey water. Naghahanap siya ng gamot para sa akin, at natutunan niyang lutuin ang mga paborito kong pagkain. Alam ko na hindi niya sinusubukang palitan ang nanay ko, pero mahirap pa rin. Kaya ko naman siyang tanggapin, pero minsan kailangan ko ng oras para mag-isa. Just listen to me, dad."

He threw his phone onto the bed, its soft thud muffled by the quilt. Sheng Wang stared at the harsh, cold light of the lamp above him, the brightness stinging his eyes. It felt like the lamp was searing through his frustrations.

Meanwhile, in the living room, Jiang Tian was awake and wandering downstairs. He poured himself a glass of water and noticed the dim light of the TV flickering in the otherwise silent room. Lea sat alone on the sofa, absorbed in an old movie.

Jiang Tian approached and set his glass down on the table. He took a seat on the single sofa, his presence both unspoken and deliberate.

Lea , her gaze fixed on the TV, finally noticed him. " anak? bakit gising ka pa?" she asked.

"Thirsty," Jiang Tian replied, glancing at the TV. "Why are you awake?"

"hindi ako makatulog. Just watching TV," lea said quietly.

"Watching TV without sound?" Jiang Tian probed further.

"It's a bit noisy," she murmured.

Jiang Tian sat in silence, feeling the weight of the room's quiet. Finally, lea broke the silence. " nahihirapan ka ba anak na tumira dito? ''

"The dormitory is convenient," Jiang Tian answered, choosing his words carefully.

Lea face flushed slightly as she continued, "I've been reflecting on my mistakes. I wonder if things could have been different if I had been less busy, spent more time with you, and not sent you away. I had a dream recently..."

She recounted a memory of Jiang Tian as a small child, clutching at her shirt with ribbons as he tried to keep her from leaving. "I realized he just wanted me to stay a bit longer, to not feel abandoned. I've been thinking, if I had handled things differently, would you have been happier?"

Jiang Tian listened quietly. He was not one for grand emotional displays, and he didn't want to hurt his mother's feelings. "No need to dwell on the past," he said softly. "You're here now."

Lea 's eyes were moist as she spoke, "I can work anytime, but I don't want to see you carrying suitcases alone and living somewhere else."

Jiang Tian looked up from the TV screen. "This time is different," he said quietly.

"Not alone."

The next morning, Sheng Wang woke to find his phone nestled in the corner of the quilt. With a reluctant sigh, he opened meta His father, Clark had sent a simple "OK" in response to the night's message.

Sheng Wang appreciated the gesture, even if it wasn't much. The school had informed him that due to military training for first-year students, his and Jiang Tian's late application meant they had to stay in temporary accommodation for a while longer.

Aunt Lea and Jiang Tian, on the other hand, had started to find their own balance. Aunt proposed to help more, and clark agreed to a compromise where they would ensure to be home on certain days, reducing guilt and increasing time spent together.

The newfound balance brought a subtle, yet noticeable improvement in their lives. Sheng Wang's mood lifted, partly because of this familial harmony and partly because of Jiang Tian's company.

ben, ever the observant friend, couldn't help but comment on Sheng Wang's improved mood. "With how you're acting lately, you're at the level of the four major happy events!" he joked.

Sheng Wang, slightly puzzled, replied, "What events?"

Ben flung his hair dramatically. "Like finding water after a drought or meeting an old friend in a foreign land!"

Sheng Wang, still bemused, just laughed and shook his head. "You're talking nonsense."

As the autumn chill began to set in, Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian prepared for the end of military training. Sheng Wang's phone buzzed with a message from Jiang Tian about their dorm assignment.

Jiang Tian: The dormitory is lined up.

Sheng: True or false? How do you know?

Jiang Tian: Lao He gave me the key.

Sheng: What's the room like?

Jiang Tian: Don't know.

Sheng: I don't want to die.

Jiang Tian: You can check it out later tonight.

Sheng Wang, amused, sent back a series of rock-and-roll emojis. Just then, the guidance councilor appeared and confiscated Sheng Wang's phone, mistakenly thinking Sheng Wang was involved in a puppy love situation.

After a brief, confusing encounter, Sheng Wang returned to his friends, who were still caught up in the post-performance excitement. The day's events felt like another step toward settling into their new routine, each small change adding to the puzzle of their lives.

Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian's journey wasn't without its hiccups, but with each passing day, they found more ways to adapt and connect, proving that even the most complex situations could eventually find their own rhythm.
