Chapter 17: Half Sentence
The car rolled to a stop at the entrance nearby. Jiang Tian hopped out, expecting Sheng Wang to follow. Instead, Sheng Wang stayed seated, clutching a bag of medicine.
"Come on, Sheng Wang, let's go!" Jiang Tian said, opening the door.
Sheng Wang didn't budge. "No, thanks."
Jiang Tian's patience was wearing thin. "Seriously? Hand over the medicine, then."
"No," Sheng Wang replied.
Jiang Tian sighed. "Alright, how about your schoolbag?"
"no,no,no,no," Sheng Wang said, keeping the bag on his shoulder.
Jiang Tian rolled his eyes. "Fine, let's just get going."
Sheng Wang got out of the car with a practiced grace that was unusual for someone who'd had a few drinks. He walked down the alley with a certain elegance that might make middle school girls swoon if they saw him.
Jiang Tian followed, wondering if Sheng Wang was pretending to be drunk. His careful steps and attention to appearance seemed odd for someone supposedly inebriated.
As they walked, Sheng Wang suddenly turned around and walked back toward Jiang Tian.
"nasaan ang phone mo?" Sheng Wang asked.
Jiang Tian, puzzled, pulled out his phone. "para saan?"
"picture tayo," Sheng Wang said, pointing to himself under a streetlamp.
Jiang Tian opened the camera app, a bit confused. "Of what?"
"This, pogi ba? " Sheng Wang said, striking a pose under the lamp. "I'm walking straight on this bumpy road. Isn't that impressive?"
Jiang Tian took the picture, chuckling. "Sure, I see."
"Is that all?" Sheng Wang asked.
"You're supposed to take a picture."
Jiang Tian sighed again. " lasing ka nga.."
They finally reached the Sheng family's home after what felt like an eternity. lea, dressed in a cozy sweater, greeted them.
"Why are you two so late?" she asked, noticing Jiang Tian's phone.
"What's with the photo?"
"Just had some fun," Jiang Tian said with a grin, slipping his phone back in his pocket.
"Come in, come in!" lea ushered them inside. "I heard Sheng Wang was out with friends."
Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang entered. Sheng Wang, though a bit slow, was steady on his feet.
Lea's sharp eyes caught something. "Did you take him out drinking?" she asked Jiang Tian.
"no mom," Jiang Tian said. "He drank on his own."
Sheng Wang, fumbling with his things, looked like he was struggling to remember something. Jiang Tian tried to help but was met with resistance.
"I'll take care of it," Jiang Tian said.
Sheng Wang looked up briefly and mumbled, "Oh."
Jiang Tian grabbed the medicine from Sheng Wang and handed it to his mom. "Got this on the way."
Lea recognized the medicine immediately. "Bought this specially?"
"Stopped on the way," Jiang Tian said casually.
"Stubborn," lea said with a smile. "He must have a cold. But with all that alcohol, he won't want to take it now."
"Let's talk to him tomorrow," Jiang Tian said. "He's probably tired."
Sheng Wang, carrying the medicine, headed upstairs. lea watched him with a concerned look.
"I'll bring him some honey water," she said, but hesitated.
Jiang Tian offered, "I'll take it. You should get some rest."
In Sheng Wang's room, he sat on the bed, staring blankly at his schoolbag and the medicine. His phone buzzed, pulling him from his daze.
Jiang Tian's message popped up: Is the door locked?
Sheng Wang replied, No.
Jiang Tian: Then I'm coming in.
Sheng Wang blinked in confusion. Before he could react, Jiang Tian knocked and entered, placing a glass of honey water on the bedside table.
"Drink this," Jiang Tian said, his voice soft.
Sheng Wang took the glass, grimacing at the sweetness. "What is this?"
"Hangover remedy," Jiang Tian explained.
Sheng Wang frowned. "Ok."
Jiang Tian extended his hand. "Give me the cup when you're done."
Sheng Wang, fighting off sleep, held onto the cup. "I need to think about something."
Jiang Tian waited patiently. After a while, Sheng Wang said, "Did you say something in the car earlier?"
Jiang Tian looked thoughtful. "Did I?"
Sheng Wang nodded. "You said we seem close but don't talk much. Then you mentioned something else."
Jiang Tian thought for a moment. "I said you could try something."
"Try what?" Sheng Wang asked.
"Try to be more close to me," Jiang Tian said with a smile. "You're not as awkward as you think."
Sheng Wang pondered this, then nodded slowly. "Alright. I'll try."
Jiang Tian watched him, relieved that their conversation had cleared the air, even if just a bit.
