Chapter 16: Drunk

Outside the bustling market, colorful lights twinkled as people bustled by. The air was filled with the sounds of car horns, chatter, and the occasional blare from small electric donkeys. Amid this vibrant chaos, a barbecue restaurant with a misleading name was packed with lively guests.

brix, the restaurant's owner, was juggling phone calls and managing guests. He spoke into his phone, "Oh, right. I forgot. Okay, I'll let you go this time. Does it hurt to say a few more words?"

He glanced around and saw Sheng Wang and his friends at a table, their faces eager. "Okay, I understand," brix said, hanging up. He turned back to the table with a shrug. "He's busy. Can't make it tonight."

A collective sigh of disappointment came from the group. "Ah..." they groaned. A girl added, "That's a shame."

Sheng Wang, feeling the shift in mood, distracted himself by cracking peanuts on the table. It wasn't as lively as he had hoped.

Suddenly, brix approached and placed a glass of water in front of Sheng Wang. "Heard you're not feeling well. No beer for you—just water."

"Just a little birdie," brix replied with a grin. "Jiang Tian mentioned it."

"Yep," he said. "I think you've had enough. Don't blame me if you end up sick!"

Sheng Wang chuckled and picked up his beer mug. "Well, I'll drink it anyway. What's life without a little fun?"

Brix shook his head with a laugh. "Alright, just don't come crying to me later!"

As Brix walked away, Sheng Wang noticed his classmates eyeing him curiously.

"Do I have a menu on my face?" Sheng Wang asked with a smile.

"No, no!" ben laughed. "We're just curious about your cool demeanor!"

The table soon filled with sizzling skewers and laughter. The group indulged in the feast, their voices growing louder with each round of drinks. They swapped stories about teachers and classmates, adding a touch of nostalgia to the night.

One story was about their class president, who was married to a math teacher. "They were the perfect couple back in the day," someone said.

Liza explained the process: one spot for grades, one for class leaders, and one by secret ballot. "It's a bit competitive, but you've got a chance," she said.

Just then, kyle noticed the bill being settled. "Who paid for all this?" he asked.

Sheng Wang casually replied, "I did. It's all sorted."

Kyle was stunned. "You... paid for everyone?"

"Yeah," Sheng Wang said with a shrug. "Just wanted to help out."

As the night drew to a close, ben , red-faced and swaying slightly, muttered, "I need to hit the bathroom. I might not make it to the door."

Sheng Wang remained at the table, feeling the alcohol's effects. His steps were unsteady as he walked slowly. Jiang Tian approached with a concerned look.

"Why are you still here?" Jiang Tian asked. "Didn't you say you'd stay until at least 10:30?"

Sheng Wang, struggling to focus, replied, "Just feeling a bit off."

Sheng Wang managed to stand with some difficulty. "What about the others?"

Jiang Tian reached into a plastic bag he was carrying. "There's medicine here, though not the kind you'd expect."

Jiang Tian chuckled. "It's not what you think. But it's better than nothing."

Sheng Wang nodded and took the bag. "Guess I'll take what I can get."

As the car drove through the city's glowing streets, Sheng Wang relaxed against the seat, comforted by Jiang Tian's presence. Despite the night's chaos and his own fuzzy head, he felt a surprising sense of calm.
