Chapter 49: Subtle

The morning sun was just beginning to light up the room. It was early, just after 5 o'clock, and the gentle brightness was gradually illuminating Sheng wang's face as he lay in bed. The cool autumn air made the quilt seem extra cozy, but Sheng wang had a habit of tossing and turning at night, leaving his arms and legs exposed.

As the cold began to get to him, he snuggled deeper into the quilt, pulling it up to his chin. He felt a bit like a sleepy cat curling up in the sun.

Jiang Tian, who used the same sea salt and wood-scented body wash as Sheng wang, was already up and moving around. The smell of the body wash in the dorm was familiar and comforting, like a personal signature left behind.

Sheng wang, still feeling a bit groggy, tried to ignore the pain in his swollen ankles. He rolled over, noticing that the quilt had once again slipped down, exposing his feet.

Kakababa lang ni Jiang Tian mula sa itaas na kama nang mapansin niyang parang hindi komportable si Sheng Wang. "Good morning," bati niya, kahit maaga pa, kalmado pa rin ang boses niya.

Sheng wang gave a small sigh, "Morning. Did I wake you up?"

Jiang Tian shook his head with a smile, "Nope, just woke up. Early bird, you know?"

Sheng wang squinted at his phone—5:20 AM. "Biological clock, huh? That's a bit early for me."

With a hint of a smirk, Jiang Tian moved to the washstand, then returned with a refreshing minty scent. "Need any help?"

"Sobrang pangit ba?" tanong niya, medyo kinakabahan.

Jiang Tian gently took Shengwang's foot and started applying the ointment. "It's not bad, just a bit swollen. You should've rested more."

As the cool ointment touched Shengwang's skin, he flinched slightly. "Oh, that's cold!"

Jiang Tian's brow furrowed. "Is it too much?"

"No, it's fine. It just surprised me. Thanks."

Jiang Tian applied the ointment with care, then stood up. "Dapat talaga magpahinga ka muna ngayon. Huwag ka nang maglakad-lakad pa," sabi ni Jiang Tian, may concern sa boses habang tinitingnan ang paa ni Sheng Wang.

Sheng wang nodded, chuckling. "Alright, alright. I'll stay put."

Just then, Suyu, who had been snoozing soundly, groggily woke up and saw the two of them. "What's going on here?" he asked, rubbing his eyes.

Jiang Tian looked a bit flustered. "Nothing, just helping Sheng wang with his foot."

Sheng wang, trying to lighten the mood, said, "Yeah, I might've made a mess of things this morning."

SuYu gave them a sleepy nod and wandered off to the bathroom, muttering, "I thought something serious was happening."

As Suyu left, Jiang Tian handed Sheng wang his phone. "Here, I took your phone earlier. Sorry about that."

Sheng wang took the phone, his fingers brushing against Jiang Tian's hand. "Thanks. Sorry for the earlier... sneak attack."

Jiang Tian smiled, his eyes twinkling. "No harm done."

The rest of the morning passed quietly. Sheng wang received a call from his head teacher, who insisted he stay in the dormitory and rest. Sheng wang agreed, promising to take it easy.

Later, Pete burst into the room, carrying lunch boxes. "Forgot these!" he said, setting them on the table. "Old man made you tofu with minced meat. Thought you might like it."

Sheng wang's face lit up with delight as he opened the lunch boxes. "This looks amazing! Thanks, pete."

As Sheng wang sat down to eat, Jiang Tian joined him. "Glad you like it. I know how much you missed this."

Sheng wang grinned, enjoying every bite. "It's perfect. And you're perfect for remembering."

Jiang Tian's cheeks flushed slightly. "I'm just glad to see you happy."

The day was quiet, filled with gentle conversation and shared moments. Sheng wang realized how much he appreciated these little things—Jiang Tian's care, the simple pleasures of a meal, and the comfort of being together.

As the day drew to a close, Sheng wang and Jiang Tian decided to stay in the dormitory for the National Day break. It felt right to be there together, making the most of their time.

And so, amid the simple joys and subtle moments, their bond grew stronger, each day bringing them closer in ways they hadn't quite anticipated.
