Chapter 42: Owe
After class, almost the entire class gathered around Sheng Wang, a mischievous grin plastered on everyone's face. Kyle , ever the clown, raised his hand like a conductor and began counting. "1, 2, 3—" he exaggerated, his fingers mimicking a baton as he conducted the group.
"libre, libre, libre!" they all chanted, dragging out the words, as if it were a song they had rehearsed a hundred times.
Sheng Wang almost choked on his water, half-laughing, half-spluttering. "Are you seriously counting the beats?" he asked, wiping his mouth.
"It's all about rhythm bro, so ililibre mo na ba kami?" kyle responded, still waving his hands in the air as if directing an orchestra. ben, standing beside him, was nearly doubled over in laughter.
Sheng Wang glanced over at Jiang Tian, his closest friend in the class. "Are they always like this? I mean, did you guys win awards by chanting for treats?"
Jiang Tian, always calm, shrugged. "Depends on the situation."
"What situation?" Sheng Wang raised an eyebrow.
Before Jiang Tian could answer, two other boys chimed in, teasing, "Well, if ben is not afraid to call for a treat, neither are we. If he's scared, then we just ask Brother tian."
Sheng Wang rolled his eyes. "So, what, you guys just decide who to bully based on who's braver?"
Kyle grinned mischievously and shouted, "Brother Sheng—"
The whole class chorused back, "Handsome!"
'' wala na bang ilalakas yan? ''
'' HANDSOME!!''
Kyle continued, "Brother Jiang tian—"
"Crazy!"
"Brother Sheng—"
"Bullshit!"
"Brother tian—"
"gwapo!"
Sheng Wang couldn't help but laugh, raising his hands in surrender. "Alright, alright! Tigilan mo na yan kyle.. I'll treat! Just stop yelling before the whole school thinks we've lost our minds!"
straightened up, grinning widely. "Seriously? You're really treating us? I thought you'd hold out longer."
Sheng Wang sighed with a smile. "You wore me down. Let's go to that barbecue place by the school after the exams. My treat."
The group cheered, and a chorus of "Thank you, thank you ang babait ninyo!" erupted, making Sheng Wang shake his head, still smiling.
Jiang Tian stood by, watching Sheng Wang with a fond look in his eyes. Sheng Wang noticed and tilted his head. "bakit ka nakatingin sakin, may dumi ba sa mukha ko?"
Jiang Tian smirked. "wala naman. Maybe I'm just admiring the view."
Sheng Wang blushed, playfully swatting at him. "parang sira to,, you're embarrassing me."
Meanwhile, at the edge of the group, wayu sat alone, quietly watching the lively scene. The noise and laughter from his classmates seemed miles away, even though they were just a few seats apart. He remembered when he first joined Class A. Back then, he had been the center of attention, surrounded by classmates who were eager to include him in their fun.
But things were different now. He felt like an outsider, disconnected from the excitement and camaraderie that everyone else shared. It stung—a lot. He had worked so hard to fit in, to be one of them. And yet, somehow, he always felt just a step behind.
As the others continued their banter, wayu sighed quietly and tucked his newly-earned certificate into his bag, already imagining the rare moment of praise from his parents later that evening.
Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang, still lingering by the window, noticed wayu's quiet demeanor. Sheng Wang nudged Jiang Tian. "Hey, is it just me, or does wayu look a little down?"
Jiang Tian glanced over and nodded. "Yeah, he's been quiet lately. Maybe we should ask him to join us tonight."
Sheng Wang grinned. "Good idea. Let's make sure he feels included. No one gets left out in our class, right?"
Jiang Tian's smile was soft, and there was a warmth in his voice as he replied, "Right. We're all in this together."
The next day, as the group prepared to head out for their barbecue feast, Jiang Tian made a quick phone call to brix, the owner of the barbecue joint. "Hey, Brother brix, just wanted to give you a heads-up. We've got a hungry bunch coming your way tonight."
But instead of brix's usual upbeat voice, another man answered. "Hi, this is brix. Brother brixi's in manila with his dad for a check-up. I'm holding the fort for now."
"Manila? Everything okay?" Jiang Tian asked, concern coloring his tone.
Brix sighed. "Yeah, just a routine check-up. Uncle's doing fine. They'll be back after National Day."
After hanging up, Jiang Tian turned to Sheng Wang, who had been eavesdropping. "Looks like we'll have to wait to see Brother brix . But don't worry, the food will still be great."
Sheng Wang nodded, but his thoughts lingered on what Jiang Tian had said. "Stomach cancer," Jiang Tian had mentioned. The words hung heavy in Sheng Wang's mind. Life could be so fragile, so fleeting. He glanced at Jiang Tian, who was watching him with that same gentle expression.
"Hey," Sheng Wang said softly, "thanks for always looking out for me."
Jiang Tian's eyes softened even more. "Always."
That night, as the group gathered around the smoky grill, the air filled with laughter, Sheng Wang made sure to pull wayu into the conversation. They joked, they teased, and for the first time in a long time, wayu felt like he was truly part of something.
As the night wore on, Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian found themselves standing a little closer, sharing quiet smiles and soft touches that went unnoticed by the rest. It was in these small moments that their bond deepened—a silent promise that they would always be there for each other, no matter what.
And maybe, just maybe, that was what made Class A so special. It wasn't just about being the best or the brightest. It was about being there for each other, in good times and bad, and making sure that no one ever felt alone.
