Chapter 13: A Perfect Score and a Lesson Learned

In a bustling classroom, Andy, stood at the front, explaining English test answers with a steady, confident tone. She glanced around and spotted Sheng Wang, fiddling with a pen, a ruler, and an eraser.

"Sheng Wang?" Andy called out, noticing his lack of focus.

"Huh?" Sheng Wang looked up, momentarily startled.

"Don't you need to check your answers?" Andy asked, raising an eyebrow.

Sheng Wang gave a sheepish smile. "Oo nga. Sorry.."

andy, who knew that Sheng Wang belonged to the "die after the test" faction of students, decided to give him a nudge. " bakit hindi ka humingi ng tulong sa katabi mo para mag check ng sagot?"

"Sure," Sheng Wang said, standing up with a chair in hand.

"nandyan si Jiang Tian sa likod mo," andy instructed. "He should be a good match for you."

Sheng Wang hesitated, mumbling, "Alright," and dragged his chair over to Jiang Tian's desk.

As Sheng Wang settled in, he tried to act busy, leaning over to peek at Jiang Tian's paper. Jiang Tian, noticing the intrusion, remarked with a smirk, "Are there nails on the table stabbing you?"

"No," Sheng Wang replied, a bit confused. Realizing the mockery, he shifted his chair closer.

A few minutes later, Sheng Wang, feeling drowsy from his illness, accidentally brushed his arm against Jiang Tian's. Startled, he quickly pulled away.

Jiang Tian glanced at him and said, " umayos ka nga.."

"Sorry," Sheng Wang mumbled, feeling embarrassed.

Despite the awkward moment, Sheng Wang corrected a mistake on his paper, adding a note with a flourish. He looked up to see Jiang Tian watching him with a skeptical expression.

"What's wrong?" Sheng Wang asked.

Jiang Tian sighed. "My paper has some weird red marks now."

Sheng Wang glanced down and saw Jiang Tian's paper had a glaring red "116" on it. Confused, he asked, "Wait, my paper is perfect. Why are there mistakes?"

andy came over and handed Sheng Wang his marked paper, with three ticks and no crosses. "Here's your paper."

Sheng Wang looked at the marks and was puzzled. "Why did you say I was wrong if my paper is perfect?"

Andy smiled, "usap nalang tayo during the break."

During the break, as the rain poured outside, Sheng Wang followed andy to her table. andy sat at her desk and motioned for Sheng Wang to sit down. "Have you seen your results?"

"Yes," Sheng Wang replied, still confused.

"You seem a bit puzzled," Yang Jing said. "perfect ang score mo, but I marked you as wrong. Are you upset?"

Sheng Wang chuckled, "Not really. I guess I can see why now. I've just been transferred here and don't want to stand out too much."

Yang Jing raised an eyebrow. "You're aware that blending in and standing out is part of the class dynamics?"

"Yeah, I think I get it," Sheng Wang said, nodding. "I didn't want to make waves."

Yang Jing smiled warmly. "Exactly. Sometimes, it's best to keep a low profile. Like your paper, you can be excellent but still fit in."

As Sheng Wang headed back to class, he realized that balancing skill and humility was a key part of fitting in. With the knowledge that his perfect score was now the talk of the class, he took Yang Jing's advice to heart, learning to navigate his new environment with a bit more finesse.
