"Why does Jefe...dress the way he does?" I asked awkwardly trying to find the right words.
I hadn't seen Flora for a while so I texted her to ensure she didn't abandon me. She informed me that she went to use the restroom in the restaurant downstairs because the line for the restrooms up here was too long.
"What do you mean princess?" Rock asked as he scanned the crowd not paying too much attention to me. It's as if he was one of the bouncers checking the room for any questionable people.
"Well, he dresses so...posh." I glanced over to the bar where José was. He leaned against it drinking some amber liquid out of a crystal glass. "I mean not tonight but every other time I've seen him he's in a slick suit and tie." I explained the reasoning behind my odd question. "When I think of people who are part of a gang I imagine black bandanas and silver chains with baggy pants." I said realizing how stereotypical I was sounding. Rock grins amused and lets out a small chuckle.
"Not very open-minded of you Buzz." Rock looks down at me. "Jefe...he likes to keep it...classy." Rock smirks lightly. "He's old-school. We have laws and rules like other cartels and gangs, but when it comes to the operations and hierarchy it is handled more like a mafia which is why we are unlike other...organizations." Rock smirked at me cheekily with the use of the word 'organizations'.  I rolled my eyes at him and pushed him lightly with the side of my body. He smiled down at me his eyes bright.
All at once an unsettling feeling washed over me...Where is Flora? I looked towards the exit to the stairs and furrowed my eyebrows slightly, she's been there for a while.
"What is it?" Rock asked me noticing my worried expression
"Has she come back yet?" I asked Rock quietly.
"Who?"
"Flora. She told me she was using the bathroom, but it's been a while." I said as I pulled my phone out to send her a text.
12:59 A.M.
Me- Hey you okay?
I stared at my text feeling sick to my stomach.
"Maybe I should go check on her..." I trailed off stepping away from Rock. Right as I got to the doorway to exit my screen lit up.
1:01 A.M.
Flora- Got sick. Going home now.
"Oh, she went home." I mumbled. Relief washed over me but I was a little bumbed she left me without saying goodbye.
"Did she say why?" Rock asked trying to see my phone.
"She said she got sick." I locked my phone putting it away. "She was drinking a lot more than me she probably threw up." Rock made a humming noise with a concentrated expression. "What? Could something be wrong?"
"I'm not sure..." Rock said vaguely lifting his head and looking to where Jefe was.
As if he felt us staring he slowly looked our way making eye contact but had a blank expression. Rock started his way over to José and I followed not sure if I should, but Rock seemed too distracted to care at the moment. José downed his drink in one quick swig and his expression changed noticing Rock's serious appearance.
"I need to speak to you Jefe." José glanced behind Rock at me.
I need to know what they are going to talk about if it involves Flora. I took my masked expressions off and let José see me rawly. He gazed back at Rock slowly.
"Okay." José gestured for Rock to lead the way out onto the balcony patio. I followed behind Jefe. He whispered something to someone by the door before exiting into the night.
The man stopped me by putting a hand up in front of me. I looked up at the big tall man with a frown and surprise. José stared back at me for a moment looked to the side for a long minute as I watched his chest rise and fall slowly.
"She's okay." He said and the man stepped aside letting me through. I slowly continued with caution.
Was he debating whether to let me come out or not?
The balcony was empty and I assumed Jefe told that man to not let anyone else outside. The night sky was like a black hole without a star in sight. The moon even seemed darker than usual.
"What is the problem?" José asked seeming bored. Rock's back was to us as he was looking out.
"You exiled them like I said?" Rock asked with a hint of panic in his voice.
"Of course," José glanced at me for a long second, "They broke the rule." He stared back at Rock who took his time to stare at me his eyes changing back to his soft hazel as he gazed at me. However, they turned back to black when his eyes set back on Jefe.
The rule? The same rule Jefe told me at Ebony and the same rule Rock mentioned when he was beating up Joquín?
'Or do I need to remind you of the number one rule of being a Velvet.'
'It's completely prohibited to commit any type of assault towards women.'
José Luña and Rock's words ran through my mind at the speed of light.
"Well, they didn't exactly." Rock tilted his head at Jefe for a split second.
"No, but you and I both agreed they should be exiled regardless. You were there during it." José shook his head confused.
"They knew I was the one who told you to do it."
"Wouldn't be hard to guess." Jefe stopped, "Why does all this matter?" Jose asked.
"Yeah," I finally spoke up, "did something happen?" I asked and they both looked at me.
"Please..." Jefe stepped closer to me, "tell Escarletta and I." José grinned at Rock devilishly.
I was surprised he didn't put an arm around me and pulled me close to his side.
Oh god. José thinks that I'm here to be around him. I only came out because Rock is here too. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Rock acts as if he doesn't want Jefe to know we are acquainted...Do I roll with this or do I decline it? I avoid both of their eyes waiting for Rock to make the decision.
"I'm taking her home then I'll talk with you." Rock said angrily and took my hand taking me away from José Luña.
Thank you.
