"Not that I don't trust you, but..." I dragged out the but, "where the hell are we?" I asked Rock as we were now somewhere on the outskirts of Crescent Valley.
"Sounds like you not trusting me, princess." He said not answering my question.
It started to appear like we were leaving the valley and escaping into the hills that surrounded the town. I looked at the tall redwood trees surrounding the worn-out asphalt road. Rock maneuvered each curve and twist easily, as well as avoiding every pot hole with practiced precision.
"With how memorized your movements are, I assume we are going to a private lodge your family owns?" I guessed. Rock let out a rough chuckle and shook his head.
"Yeah, I don't think you wanna continue guessing." Rock pressed his lips into a thin line as if he was holding back a smile. But damn, don't hold it back. I rarely ever see it, and when I do, I'm still trying to decide if he inherited it from an angel or the devil. I twisted my face into a pout and we rode in silence with the soft hum of the radio in the background until static was the only thing coming through the speakers.
Rock slowed, taking a turn off the never-ending road and onto a separately paved driveway. We came up to an iron privacy gate made with what looked like the same wood as the trees that hooded around us. The gate was used to enter what I assumed to be some type of residence. Rock stopped and rolled his window down, then pressed a couple of numbers in and placed his thumb firmly on the keypad.
"Oh shit." I muttered aloud by accident. Rock smirked as he rolled his window back up, and the gates started to swing open slowly. His car revved when he pressed down on the gas pedal, thankfully covering up the thumping in my heart and my blood pressure that skyrocketed.
"Don't worry, we are just celebrating a win." Rock explained as the driveway expanded. What does a win mean for the Velvets? I feel like being as close to Rock as I am I should know more, but I'm just as in the dark about everything as I was before I even knew about Black Velvet.
The driveway like the road before was covered and lined with redwood trees until we drove over a small hill and a mansion was presented before me. It was beautiful, adorned with the same palette as the gate, made of iron and redwood.
The road curved around into a circular driveway, and several cars, including Jefe's Supra, were parked along the curve of the driveway.
"A win?" I questioned. "What kind?" I asked him staring up at the mansion when he parked.
"Hm..." Rock thought for a moment. "Making an associate bow." He swung his keys on his finger before shoving them in his pocket.
I don't know if he meant literally or figuratively, but either way I'd say that's a win.
Before I could continue my thought my car door opens and Rock stares down at me. My heart beat stutters at the sight of him opening my door for me. I told myself if he tried to open the door for me I'd shut the door with his face in it that...was a long time ago. I press my tongue to the roof of my mouth to keep myself grounded.
"Thanks." I muttered.
He closed the door behind me and I let him lead the way. We get to the door it was tall and was solid oak with iron bar design. I stop him before we enter.
"Am I..." I stopped to reword my question. "Does José know I'm coming?"
Rock smirked before answering. "He doesn't need to." Rock presses the door bell and a voice rings out. What does that mean? Isn't José the boss...I mean Jefe.
"Bueno." A voice intercom on the porch we stood on. "Ah, hola amigo. Quine es esa chica?"
"Ella es mio." Rock's voice rumbled. I forgot how attractive and different he sounded when he spoke in Spanish. I heard the lock on the door click. "Let's go." He folded his hand in mine, opened the heavy oak door, and led me inside.
