Crystal's POV
Dinner time felt like a responsibility, never like family time which was what it was meant to be. We had another meal in silence, and that's when my dad decides to "break the silence" with another comparison game.
-
Crystal's father: I thought you said you were going to change.
Chloe: I am changing!
Crystal's father: Then explain why you only got a 19/30 for the maths test.
Crystal's mother: Hey, calm down. She got a 13/30 the last time. This is a very decent improvement.
Crystal's father: Then explain how she got a 17/30 for A Math?
Crystal's mother: Because she takes her A Math tuition seriously. Unlike you, who thinks that grades are everything.
Crystal's father: So why do you bother? The only subject she got an A on is geography. Why should I be happy for her growth?
Crystal's mother: Because I hardly see getting Cs now, unless she's been studying her sciences the wrong way.
Crystal's father: Whatever, Crystal got an A for History, E Math and English. Her A Math was a high B, but whatever, at least she's not useless and contributes to society with all the life skills girl guides equipped her.
Crystal's mother: If she's becoming more disciplined, she will be useful in society one day! She will be animating the advertisements for YouTube and the local television someday, I'm sure of that.
Crystal's father: And what makes you so sure? She should go to JC and become a doctor. That is a lot more useful than being an animator.
Crystal's mother: I have enough of your nonsense.
Crystal's father: So what? Learnt Chloe's tendencies to run away from her problems and get a divorce with me?
Crystal's mother: Something worse.
-
I gasped when my mother declared "something worse." She played a Chinese song on her phone and lured my father to the staircase, before pushing him down a flight of stairs. When I got down to the stairs, he had blacked out by then but I had no means of saving him because I wasn't in a safe position to operate CPR on my own father. I was only able to call the paramedics and inform them about my situation.
Hospital
At the hospital, my mother, Chloe and I had to answer a number of questions about the situation that happened. From the investigations, she concluded that my mother had to be sent to the police station for further investigations as a suspect of a murder case. The nurse called the police in front of my eyes, and Chloe and I were staring at shock as we realised what our mother had done. The police hung up and then took our mother away to be deported to the police station for questioning. Not long after, a nurse emerged out of the emergency room, asking, "Are you the daughters of Mr Ong?" Confused by her speed in working on my father's health, we nodded and got closer to her.
"We have identified that your father has gone into shock because of the severity of the fall. His body weight wasn't able to support his tumble down the stairs and damaged his body. I'm sorry, but this means this is the end for your father," the nurse announced. Chloe and I looked at each other to absorb the news and simultaneously, we both cried softly. I had to keep it lowkey, just in some ah Beng went to catch me crying on camera and use that to his own advantage.
I really hope this is finally the end of the comparisons. The fact it has evolved into murder speaks volumes about how bad things got this fast.
