Inside, Mi-Rae had just opened her eyes, glancing around with a mixture of confusion and hope. Her heart leapt when she noticed the familiar figure entering the room-Jungkook, with Soojin right behind him.
Jungkook's eyes softened when he saw her awake. "Mi-Rae," he whispered, rushing to her side and taking her hand. His voice, barely audible, held a hint of relief. "Babe.. babe...Are you okay?"
Mi-Rae gave a faint nod, a smile breaking through her tired expression. She gripped his hand tightly, her eyes never leaving his face.
While Jungkook and Soojin helped Mi-Rae, Tae and Na-Rae quietly entered from the back. Tae looked down at Na-Rae, leaning in to whisper in her ear, "When this is all done, I'm taking you somewhere no one will find us."
Na-Rae shot him a warning look, though her lips twitched with a smile. "Only if you make it out of here without getting caught," she replied, her tone daring.
Tae grinned, winking. "Oh, I plan to. I have to keep my promise to my minion, don't I?"
Tae and Na-Rae slipped quietly into the dimly lit chamber from the back, their movements swift and silent. They found Jungkook gently cradling Mi-Rae, his expression one of relief mixed with urgency.
"Kookie, we don't have time," Tae whispered sharply. "Let's go."
Jungkook nodded, carefully lifting Mi-Rae into his arms as she leaned against him, exhausted yet smiling at his presence. Soojin guided them from the front, motioning silently toward the hidden passage. Tae and Na-Rae flanked them, each keeping vigilant watch on either side.
When they reached the outer courtyard, Jimin was already there, stationed by the exit and nodding in their direction. He signaled the clear path for them, and, one by one, they slipped out of the palace undetected.
The group made their way quickly to Yuna's house, where they knew they'd be safe for a short while. Yuna's parents and Jimin's family were still at the feast, so the house was empty, offering them the privacy they needed.
As they entered, Yuna hurried over to Mi-Rae, her face full of concern. "Come with me, Mi-Rae. Let's get you comfortable." She helped her friend change out of the palace attire, choosing a simpler gown, while Jungkook brought food and sat beside her, a relieved smile softening his face.
With Soojin, Jimin, and Yuna sensing that the couple needed time alone, they quietly left the room, closing the door behind them.
Once outside, Soojin turned to Jimin and Yuna, a gentle smile on her face. "I should return to the palace. They'll notice my absence soon." Jimin and Yuna nodded in understanding. As Soojin walked away, disappearing into the quiet night, Jimin felt a weight he'd been carrying suddenly rise. Without warning, he turned to Yuna and pulled her into a hug, holding her close.
"Jimin, what's wrong?" Yuna asked, her voice barely a whisper as she felt him tremble in her arms.
He broke the embrace, but his eyes were wet. "I...I just felt so much for him. He's been through so much, and I don't know if I'd have been as strong if it were me." His voice cracked, the emotions he'd held back spilling forth. "It hurt to see him like that, to know what he's been enduring."
Yuna wrapped her arms around him, holding him tightly. "Don't cry, Jimin. We're here together now. I'm not going anywhere."
Inside, Jungkook sat close to Mi-Rae, gently holding a bowl of rice in one hand as he brought a spoonful to her lips. But his eyes glistened, unable to hide the tears that had gathered. Mi-Rae took his hand, her fingers brushing softly against his cheek to wipe away the tears that had finally fallen.
"You found me, Kook," she whispered, a soft smile brightening her face. "I'm here with you. Please, don't cry."
But Jungkook looked down, struggling to hold back his own sobs. "I'm so sorry, babe...I... I should've protected you better. I should've been there. I... I..." His voice broke as he choked on the words, overwhelmed with guilt and relief.
Mi-Rae reached forward, wrapping her arms around him, and he clung to her tightly, as if anchoring himself to her presence. They stayed there, holding each other in silence, letting the moment heal the scars they'd both carried.
