A/N: Oh my. I loved this one. Finishing this felt like a divorce. This might be my favourite fic I've ever written, EVER. Okay some things to say, firstly, I'm not caught up in the Manga or Anime. I don't know Shamrock, or Garling and so if they're ooc I'm sorry waaa, I did a lot of research and tried to portray them as I figured they would be. Secondly this is beefy, very beefy, it's 52K words. That's a LOT!! So enjoy and uh, hope you like the twist!!
The smoke reached the Red Force long before the island did. Beckman noticed it first, a thin grey smear against the horizon that didn't sit right against the pale morning sky, and he said nothing for a long moment, simply watching it thicken as the current carried them closer.
He had sailed the Grand Line long enough to know that smoke like that, low and heavy and spreading rather than rising, rarely came from a cooking fire or a blacksmith's forge. It came from something burning that was never meant to burn, and it had been burning for a while.
"Boss" he called eventually, his voice carrying easily across the deck without needing to be raised, "you'll want to see this". Shanks ambled over from where he'd been leaning against the mast, sake cup loose in his hand, that easy half smile still hanging on his face out of habit more than anything else.
He followed Beckman's line of sight, squinted against the glare of the sun, and the smile didn't so much fall as simply switch off, extinguished the way a candle went out when you pinched the wick. "That's not a small fire" he murmured, mostly to himself, and set the cup down on the railing without looking at it.
