This oneshot is kind of being told in the past from Maya's perspective.Warning: this oneshot may get you emotional
Maya's POV:
I walked into John Adams high school, not really sure what to expect. In tv shows and movies, they always make high school seem like the worst place ever.
I always thought it wasn't true but moving to New York and going to a new school as a freshman, I was wrong.
I walked down the hallway, passing kids that were twice my size.
"Hey, want a drink?" A older guy asked me.
Another guy popped up with him. "Chill, she looks like a freshman. She's still too young."
They all walked away laughing and I sighed. This was going to be awful.
This was all my parents fault for getting divorced, and my mom wanting to move to New York.
We used to live in California so she wanted to get as far away from my dad as possible.
I went to the front office to find my guidance consoler to get my locker and such.
As I was walking in the hallway, I bumped into this guy who seemed like a foot taller than me.
Probably another senior, this wasn't going to end well.
"I'm so sorry." The guy said, looking at me.
I picked up my map of the school from the ground that I had dropped. "It's okay."
I started to walk away when he pulled on my backpack slightly. "I'm Lucas, by the way."
I turned around slowly. "Are you a senior?"
He shook his head. "No. A freshman."
I was really surprised but relieved. "Me too."
The bell rang before I could say anything else and I still had to to get to the office.
"Umm...ill see you around. I'm Maya by the way."
I headed towards the office as the hallways were clearing up for classes.

Ever since the first day of school, Lucas has been my only friend. Not that I'm complaining or anything, he's a great guy.
I sat my lunch down on a table and looked at Lucas.
Most days he was happy and upbeat, but other days he looked a little depressed.
"You okay?" I asked him as I sat down.
"Yeah." He said, suddenly looking up. "I am fine."
"so guess what?" I said to him, trying to change the subject.
"What?"
"My birthday is in six months."
He rolled his eyes playfully. "I know, and I know exactly what you want."
I smiled. "I just like to remind you."
"Don't worry, your party is going to be a blast. I'm already planning it." He said.
