I walked into 6th period right as the bell rang.

Last period of the day until I had a 4 day weekend for thanksgiving!

Mr Matthews walked into the classroom, a millisecond late as usual.

"Good afternoon class."

He put his stuff down and said, "so 4 day weekend right?"

The class cheered when he said that.

"Although you will have a project over the break." He finished.

Everybody groaned and I just shrugged. Not like I would do it.

"Really dad?" Riley said.

He waved his hand. "Nah, I don't even have any class work for you guys today."

This is why I like him as a teacher. We don't even learn history.

"But I do have an activity somewhat."

I watched him hand out little sheets of paper after he said that.

"Are you guys excited for thanksgiving?" Riley asked.

I turned around to Lucas and Farkle sitting there.

"Yeah! It's always a good time with family." Lucas said.

I sighed, turning away. I wish that was true for me.

Every year, my mom worked on thanksgiving at the diner. And I didn't have any siblings.

Luckily for the Matthews, I don't spend the holidays alone.

But I wish I could spend it with my actual family, if that was possible...

Mr Matthews was standing at the front again, beginning to talk.

"With these little pieces of paper, I want you name one thing you are thankful for. Just one." He explained.

"How do I choose only one?" Farkle asked from behind me.

"It's easy. Just think about it."

This sounded fishy. Probably another one of mr Matthews lessons somehow.

I looked at the piece of paper. I had no idea what to write, really.

But I decided on friends. They are always here for me, no matter what.

I couldn't ask for better friends.

The bell was about to ring so mr Matthews held out a recycling bin at the front.

"We recycle them?" Riley asked him, folding hers.

Mr Matthews shrugged. "If you want to."

I threw mine in the bin as the bell rang.

I was walking out the door when I saw Lucas behind me. "Hi Maya."

I turned around. "Hi Lucas."

We reached our lockers and I got all my stuff out.

"So what'd you write?" Lucas asked, referring to the papers.

"Oh, you know." I turned to him. "My friends...you guys are the best."

Lucas just smiled. "You are pretty awesome yourself."

He was still holding his paper I saw. "You kept yours?"

He shrugged. "I mean, yeah. I forgot to recycle it."

"Oh I can do it for you?" I said awkwardly.

Okay so confession: I actually have a crush on Lucas.

So I kinda start the awkwardest conversations.

He smiled, as if he wanted me to take it. "Sure, thanks!"

He handed it to me and put his backpack on. "Well, I better get going. You have a great holiday."

I nodded. "Thanks."

He waved and i watched him leave.

I looked at the note. I was tempted to see what he wrote.

Who am I kidding, it probably wasn't anything special.

But I opened it anyway.

As I unfolded it and got to where he wrote, I saw what it read:

Maya.
