"Ok class listen up!" Mrs Thompson said, shouting over the chats of high school students.
Mrs. Thompson cleared her throat to get the classes attention in health class.
"Okay listen up." She repeated. "This week we are starting the baby project."
Everybody in the class groaned loudly.
Mrs Thompson smiled. "Glad you guys are excited!"
She grabbed a clipboard off her desk and started to read off the list. "You guys will be paired with the opposite gender and you guys will take care of a baby doll for one week" she showed the class the baby dolls.
"The partners are... Missy and Josh, Sarah and Joe, Riley and Farkle, Maya and Lucas..."
The four friends in the back exchanged looks. "At least we didn't get paired up with a stranger." Farkle said.
Maya turned towards Lucas and smirked. "Ready to take care of this baby Lucas?"
He copied her smirk and said, "oh yeah."
They turned their attention back to mrs Thompson who had finished saying the names off the list.
Missy one of the populars groaned, "I wanted Lucas!!" She turned around and winked at lucas.
Lucas rolled his eyes.
"No switching partners!" Mrs Thompson scolded.
"'Now, girls come up and get your babies."
Maya and Riley groaned as they got up and got their babies.
Maya received her baby and looked at her. Suddenly, it started crying.
"I didn't do anything!" She said, unsure how to quiet the baby down.
Mrs Thompson took a seat at her desk. "These babies cry, poop and need to be feeded. You guys will take turns taking care of the babies at night."
The bell rang, which meant the day was over.
The baby finally quieted down as Maya picked it up and walked out into the hallway.
Maya turned towards Lucas. "You want him?"
Lucas held out his hands. "Sure I'll take her or him tonight."
"Okay. Now don't drop it because I need to pass health class." Maya warned him.
"I don't know I might..." He teased. "We'll be just fine."
Maya nodded. "Well I gotta go. See you later!"
Maya walked away and right away, the baby started crying.
"Oh boy." Lucas muttered.
-that night-
Maya was in her bedroom trying to do her homework when her phone buzzed.
She picked it up and saw it was a text from Lucas.
Lucas: help!!! This baby won't shut up!!
Maya looked at the time. 11:00.
She sighed and shut her books.
Maya: I'll be right over.
She stuck her phone in her pocket and snuck out her window to Lucas.
-at Lucas's house-
"Ugh please shut up." Lucas groaned. The baby has been crying for 6 hours.
"I'm here." Maya climbed through Lucas's window.
Lucas stood up "oh thank goodness."
He gave Maya the crying baby and fell into his bed.
"Hey! I'm not doing this alone." Maya said, rocking the baby.
"Just 10 minutes." Lucas said holding up his 10 fingers.
Maya sighed. "fine."
She sat at his desk chair and rocked the baby.
"Is there a mute button on this thing?" She asked herself.
She yawned, not even realizing that the baby stopped crying. She shot up and smiled. "Finally."
She put the baby down on the desk gently and started to go out the window when a arm grabbed her. "You are not leaving."
Maya whined. "lucassss."
Lucas sat up in bed. "I need your help! Please. Just for tonight."
Maya sighed. "fine I guess I'll sleep on the floor."
"Or you could sleep with me." Lucas said.
Maya laughed. "In your dreams."
They turned the lights off and fell asleep.
-a week later-
Maya and Lucas return their baby to mrs Thompson.
Mrs Thompson checks the back to see how much it cried and got fed. She looked impressed.
"wow. Impressive, ms Hart and mr Friar."
They smiled.
"Good job. You got an A!" Mrs Thompson said.
"Yes!" Maya and Lucas said. They almost hugged but then settled with a high five. Awkwardddd.
They headed back to their seats.
"we make pretty good parents don't we?" Lucas asked her.
"I guess so." Maya smiled.
