My legs and hand trembled as I walked to the door, coffee in hand and ready to be chucked the moment I heard something I didn't like. I slowly opened my door, seeing a thin figure dressed head to toe in an all black ensemble of a hoodie, sweatpants, and Nike slides and black socks. I gave him a nasty look, unable to understand how he could show up out of the blue after a year. "Can I help you?"
"Look, hear me out." David attempted to push his way past me, but I blocked him from entering. He paused for a moment, taking off his hood to fix the black snapback on his head. He put his hands out in front of him and used them for emphasis. "I just need to ask you for help."
"On?" I sipped my coffee, leaning on my doorknob.
"Scott's birthday... I need to rent that boat again." David rubbed the back off his neck. "I was wondering if maybe you could ask Caleb for it again."
"That's not why you're here." I shook my head, knowing very well David's wallet could afford to rent a party boat for a day. "What's the real reason you're here, David."
"I..." David let out a large breath before exploding. "I hate that everyone is at eachother's throats.! I thought everything would be okay once you left, but it has just gotten worse! You were the mediator for all of our bullshti! Liza and Gabbie have no one to vent to when they get mad at each other! Alex has no one to share rabbit facts to so Dom and I have to fucking listen to it all day! Scott and Todd have to talk with Elton about sports and they fight because no one is there to stop them! Zane... Zane is such a douchebag! Andrea makes him such a nasty-"
"Zane is with Andrea?" I felt the familiar sulking feeling hit my chest.
"She changed him!" David shook his head, yes, getting louder. "He used to be such a happy guy and now he's always so serious! He won't come out without her! Sometimes I just... And Heath? Yo, I love Amber and all but... She could do some much better. Like Heath is cool, but she is going to be a lawyer! I'm sorry but I don't think having a chain smoking, alcoholic, sex-maniac of a boyfriend is going to help your career!"
"She's in law school?" I took another gulp of coffee, nearly choking on it.
"I know!" David's voice cracked. He shook his head, calming down and looking over my shoulder. "You seem like you did pretty decent for yourself, though."
"I sold the car I got him." I shrugged, earning a loud laugh from David.
"Good for you." David's smile fell as he looked to the ground, shuffling the weight on his feet. He looked back up at me, handing in his hoodie's pockets. "Hey, uhm... You know everyone is kind of just waiting for you to talk to them."
"Oh, really?" I scoffed. "I somehow highly doubt that."
"I can vogue for everyone that's not Heath or Gabbie." David shrugged. "Gabbie doesn't talk about you and everyone is too scared to ask Heath about you."
"Well, I can vogue for myself when I say I don't want to speak to any of them." I shrugged, feeling my voice crack. "I spent a year alone and getting nasty stares whenever I'm with Brennen. I don't really feel too welcomed, David."
"That's because we all hate you two together and know you should be with-" David laughed before stopping himself,.
David went to apologize and I stopped him, taking my hand off of the doorknob and putting it out. "I know, I just... We are done. I know..." I looked down before looking back up, gripping the coffee cup tightly in both of my hands. "I know that look he gives her. I used to see it everyday and... I took advantage of it, of him, of us, and I... I fucked up. I have accepted it and I've moved on."
"Have you?" David's eyes followed tdon to my hands, looking at both rings Heath had gotten me. I placed my mug on the table next to my front door,, putting my hands behind my back while David spoke. "Well, if you change your mind... Come to Scott's party. Please. It's-"
"Tomorrow." I finished for him, getting an odd look from him. "Brennen already told me. I'll see you."
"See you." He gave me a tight smile and small wave, walking off of my porch and back to his Tesla as I closed the door behind him.
