I looked across the table in a state of shock, hoping my eyes had suddenly decide to lose touch with reality. As we finished with ordering our food, we spoke among ourselves. Though, my eyes couldn't top but to be attached to the pink strands of hair vibrantly jutting out of Zane's face. Cutting off his sentence to Gabbie, he raised an eyebrow at me. "Is there something wrong, Kate?"
I grimaced slightly, not sure if I should tell the truth of not. "Why... Why would you do that to your face, Zane?"
Zane laughed, rolling his eyes. "If it makes you feel say better, this is what set Andrea of to begin with." I paused, not wanting to make another comment after being compared to her. "I don't mean it like that... She was pissed off because she said, I quote, 'I can't even be seen with you on social media anymore'. Everything is just... appearances to her."
I shook my head, being cut off by Gabbie snapping. "That's facing bullshit, Zane! How could she not want to be seen with you? I mean, Heath I could understand, but you?"
Heath reached over me to grab my napkin, crumbling the thin paper into a ball before throwing put at Gabbie as he laughed. He looked over at Zane, twirling the straw in his plastic cup of Diet Coke. "She's right though, man. That's really fucked up on her part."
Zane shrugged, taking a sip of his Sprite before continuing. "I don't know... I just feel like... Like she has her days, but-"
"Stop right there, Zane." I said, putting my finger up. "If you have to justify someone treating you like shit, there is a problem. You don't deserve to get treated like your'e an embarrassment. If anything, she should be strutting you around, because you're the best thing that could have possibly happened to her."
I watched Zane turn a shade of pink I had never seen before, nearly matching his fluorescent beard. Before he could say anything, the waitress set our food down in front of us. Digging into my plate of fish tacos, I felt Heath put his left hand on my leg, giving it a slight squeeze. He looked at Zane who sat across from me, smiling lightly at him. "She's right, dude. You don't deserve to be with someone who brings you down."
Zane smiled as Gabbie handed him a napkin, though he looked at her confused. She spoke softly s she rolled her eyes, wiping the sour cream and rice that was plastered to the right side of his face. "You are a gem and she is a rock." She put the dirty napkin on the table, looking Zane in the eyes. "A dirty, dumb, ugly rock that's at the bottom of the LA river and will give you a chemical burn if you try and touch her. Forget about her and eat your burrito. You have me... And all of us."*****
On the drive home, I continuously tried to reach put for Heath's hand, only to have him slyfully pull it away to scratch his face or fix his hair. By the fourth time, I had become fed up. "What's wrong with you?" Heath raised an eyebrow. "I just want to hold your hand."
"Are you still attracted to Zane?" Heath blurted out quickly. I stared at Heath with wide eyes, trying to figure out if I hear him right. "Well? Are you?"
"Heath, why the hell would you ever think that?" I half laughed, being too shocked to do much else at such an insane idea.
"I don't know... What you said to him... You said he was attractive. I just-"
"You're the single most handsome..." I moved over in the passenger's seat of Big Red, balancing myself on my left hand on top of Heath's right thigh. I left light kisses from hischeek down to the rook of his neck with every word I spoke. "Caring... Funny... Smart... Sexiest man I ever laid my eyes on."
Heath pulled up to a stoplight, moving his face towards mine. He smiled into a kiss, breaking it for a moment to rest his forehead on mine. "So, your place or mine?"
"Mine. Gabbie is staying over Carly and Erin's tonight." I smirked, placing both hands on the sides of his cheeks to quickly kiss him. Just as the light turned green, I sat back in my seat with a goofy grin on my face. Heath grabbed my hand, kissing the top of it before holding it close to him as he made his way to my loft.
Just as we rode up my driveway, a sinking put fell into the bottom of my stomach. Looking over at a smirking Heath, I realized that this wasn't in his nature... This was the first time I had ever seen him truly jealous before. Breaking my intrusive thoughts, he kissed me before getting out of the truck and motioning for me to follow him to my front door.
