Wednesdays were Luke's favorite day of the week. It was the day Michael, the boy he knew from school would upload a new music cover on his YouTube channel.

He didn't really know him but they went to the same school and had Math and Biology together.

Being selectively mute didn't help Luke with making friends. Of course, there was Calum, his tutor but even when he talked to him he was stuttering.

As soon as he got the notification Luke abandoned his homework, grabbed his laptop, earphones and went to his bed.

He didn't recognize the song or the artist but that way he got great music recommendations. Luke already started to listen to blink-182, Good Charlotte and many more amazing artists because of Michael's covers.

After he pressed play Michael started playing his guitar without any introduction to it. The melody was catchy and Michael's voice was just as amazing if not even better than normal. The song suited his raspy tone amazingly.

When Luke started to actually listen to the lyrics he frowned.

'I tried to be perfect but nothing was worth it.'

'This place is so empty - my thoughts are so tempting'

Luke pressed pause immediately.

Michael never sang sad songs. He always said the songs he likes to cover represent his feelings somehow and Luke didn't like the lyrics of this one.

He closed his laptop without finishing it and went to sleep with a frown on his face.

Michael was surprisingly early at school so he had time to get to his locker before his first period. He headed towards the classroom but was stopped. Someone pulled his sleeve.

He turned around and saw Luke Hemmings. The tall, shy and cute boy who had a few classes with him but had never said a word to him. Michael wasn't sure he ever even heard him speak.

"Is something wrong?" He asked softly. Luke's facial expression had a sad vibe to it so he went easy on him even if he didn't appreciate him pulling his hand back.

"I-I l-listened to your-r co-cover yesterday."

Michael smiled softly. Luke had a sweet voice.

"What did you thought of it?"

He didn't have that many views on his covers and he never thought Luke Hemmings would be listening to them.

"I-I d-didn't like it."

Michael frowned. Is that why he stopped him? To tell him his singing was shit? He pulled his hand back from Luke's hold.

"D-do you really f-feel l-like that?"

The older boy didn't get it so Luke continued.

"I-it's a s-sad song. Y-you s-shouldn't feel t-that way." Luke was clearly annoyed at himself for stuttering and Michael's heart melted.

"Did you listen to the entire song?"

Luke shook his head.

This time Michael was the one to slightly push Luke from the middle of the hallway, closer to the lockers. He pulled his phone and earphone out of his pocket and gave them to Luke while he searched for the song.

Sum 41 - Pieces

"Listen to the lyrics."

Michael pressed play and Luke focused on the words. The start was just as sad as what Michael sang in his cover.

There was an amazing guitar solo somewhere in the middle and when the singer started singing again the lyrics were a bit different.

'I tried to be perfect - it just wasn't worth it. Nothing could ever be so wrong.'

"I'm not sad," Michael explained when Luke returned him his earphones. "I used to feel the need to fit in and stop wearing so much blank and stuff but it only made me more miserable. This song in my eyes shows that being a loner isn't a bad thing but trying to be perfect is. And that's how I feel and that's why I covered it."

"I love your voice," Luke said because it was the best response he got. He managed to get it out without stuttering.

The bell rang and Michael smiled at him. "Look, I have to go but I'll find you during lunch period and we could talk about music, okay?"

"Okay," Luke whispered and watched the older boy leave with a promise of talking to him again.
