alternative universe: some people have the mermaid gen in their body. they can grow a tail in seawater and breathe underwater but are part human outside the water.

The rest of the marine biology students who were doing a field internship with Michael told him he was lucky. Their reports were always multiple pages long but for some reason whenever Michael was on the boat he never spotted any dolphins.

Which sucked since his entire final paper was focused on these that mammals Michael found so intriguing.

Out of their class, Michael was the only one with a boat driving permit and when the rest of the class split into groups, their professor told him to work alone.

Their job was to drive into the open, a few kilometers away from the city's port where dolphins would usually swim. They had to observe their behavior, write down the number of them, and other details they found interesting.

Whenever Michael was out on the sea, dolphins were nowhere to be found which resulted in him sleeping through half of his internship.

Luckily for him, the boat had installed sensors and no security cameras so he was still able to wake up if anything relatively big came anywhere close to the boat.

Michael was just about to go home when the sensor started to beep. He quickly got excited but frowned when he didn't see anything out on the open in the direction the sensor was pointing at.

The green-eyed student was at the top of his class so he realized whatever the moving dot on the screen was, it wasn't a dolphin. It was moving slowly and with the stream, it seemed like the waves were carrying something against the shore.

When the dot got close enough, Michael took his binoculars and looked at the sea.

It looked like a body.

Michael panicked and turned the boat on and started to steer it towards what looked like a lifeless body.

Luckily for him, the boat wasn't that big so when he was close enough he was able to lean over the fence and pull the human out of the water.

Or in this case, a merman.

"Oh shit," Michael cursed as he recognized his professor's son.

Michael didn't know many mermaids or mermen but he knew his professor was married with one and that one of their three sons had the ability to grow a tail in the contact with seawater as well.

He knew the priority was to call in the accident but instead he started to CPR the unconscious boy.

The biology student definitely didn't imagine that's how his first kiss with the merman he was crushing on would look like.

It didn't take long before Luke started coughing water and Michael rushed to find him a towel or a blanket.

It didn't seem like Luke recognized him when he weakly asked where they were.

"It's your dad's boat," Michael answered worriedly.

"Oh," Luke seamed extremely confused but then all of a sudden he started to giggle. "Did you really just CPRed a merman?"

Only then Michael remembered that Luke couldn't really drown and that his breathing wasn't obvious due to him breathing differently underwater.

He started blushing immediately. "I'm sorry, I panicked. You seemed unconscious. What happened anyway?"

Luke cuddled into the blanket and shrugged his shoulders. "I'm not sure. I'm a bit sick so my senses aren't the best. I think I must have hit a ship or something with my head. I remember feeling really sleepy all of the sudden."

"We need to get you to the hospital as soon as possible then," Michael called first the ambulance then Luke's father before turning the boat on.

It took a few minutes but once Luke's tail changed into legs (Michael didn't stare at the transformation at all), he helped him onto a chair in the cabin.

"Could you die?" Michael asked softly once they were almost at the port. "Like if you couldn't breathe and would get dragged onto the open sea."

"Of course I could," Luke answered just as quietly. "I never said thank you but you did save my life."

Michael started to blush again.

"I was unconscious so I was breathing and I could breathe. But if I'd wake up with a concussion in the middle of the sea I wouldn't be able to swim back."

As soon as the boat was parked, both the ambulance and Luke's father rushed on the boat.

Michael sighed as he saw the yellow truck drive away. His report will once more include absolutely nothing about dolphins.

"Last time I was in this hospital I was visiting you." Michael smiled as he walked hand in hand with his husband.

"Visiting me after saving my life," Luke added. "You're still my prince charming."

And still, after six years since the accident occurred Michael still blushed when someone mentioned him saving Luke's life.

"Can't believe I'm going to be an uncle," Luke said as they sat down in the waiting room. Once more, Michael was the one to first find Luke's sister in law when she went into labor.

"Maybe if your niece will be cute enough we should consider getting some kids too."

Luke was taken by surprise by Michael's statement. To him, it was a miracle enough someone was able to love him with his legs and his tail but to want that. It was a dream.

Luke blinked away the tears and leaned over to kiss his man.

Kissing him now was definitely better than the CPR he received a few years back.

A tad different than requested but really couldn't imagine Michael as a fisherman. (':

Thoughts?

How do you say 'dolphin' in your language? If it isn't English (': - in Slovenian it's delfin (:
