Every time Luke would close his eyes he'd relive the moment he almost lost his life.

Sun was shining brightly almost blinding him, he was listening to his favorite album of the year just heading home from work. Luke can't remember which song was on when it happened because the next slide in his memory lane is filled with screaming, the sound of tires squealing before everything went blank.

Luke groaned loudly and pulled the blanket over his head. The machines were buzzing and beeping in the rhythm of his heartbeat not helping him to fall asleep at all.

He finally gave up when the clock on the wall passed two in the morning. Luke pressed the call button and waited.

"Hello? You called?" The voice definitely didn't belong to his nurse. Luke looked from the blanker and confirmed his own theory.

"Hi." His voice was groggy. "Where's my nurse?"

The blond, male man was clearly a nurse as well if his uniform was anything to go by. He offered Luke a smile and stepped closer to the patient's bed. "She went on her lunch break. Or late dinner. Or early lunch for that matter."

When Luke didn't laugh at his joke the nurse came closer and grabbed his medical record file that was placed at the end of his bed. "Sorry. I'm Michael, I cover for Helen while she's on her breaks." Michael looked at the file. "What can I do for you, Luke?"

Luke looked away feeling weak for admitting it. "I can't sleep. I need something for that."

Michael checked something that was written on the paper and shook his head. "I'm sorry Luke. You already got a sleeping pill plus you're still on pain medication."

He was a grown man but the thought of not sleeping made his eyes water. The physical pain from the accident was nothing compared to the visions in his head.

The nurse's look was sympathetic. "You want to tell me why you can't sleep? Are you in pain?"

"I almost killed someone three weeks ago. A young boy. I almost ran him over with my car and every time I close my eyes I see it happen."

Michael frowned. "That's not what I've heard."

Luke opened his eyes and looked at the confused look on Michael's face.

"I work on the floor below you and three weeks ago we got a kid with a bruised hand and weak brain trauma. The kid, Joey, got it from jumping away from the middle of the road. The road on which he ran after his friend kicked a ball in the direction. He jumped away but he didn't have to because of the driver, the driver who was driving under the speed limit risked his own life and crashed into a tree to avoid hurting the boy."

Till then Luke never knew the boy's name. He didn't want to. Luke knew the boy was at the same hospital. He and his parents had requested to see him a few times but he denied them every time.

"You're the hero of this story Luke. Don't let your brain tell you otherwise. Joey went home a few days after being accepted into the hospital while you, you're still here because of a severe concussion, three broken ribs, and a dislocated shoulder." Michael read his injuries off Luke's medical file.

"Is he okay?"

"He is. Thanks to you. He was sad because he didn't have the chance to thank you. Don't let your brain tell you otherwise."

Luke swallowed down the tears and nodded weakly. "Thank you."

Michael smiled and dropped the file back to its place. "Do you like music?"

Luke nodded.

"Would it help you fall asleep?"

"I can't listen to it. My doctor said I need to stay away from electronic devices that aren't here with the reason to keep me alive."

"Wait a minute." Michael went out of the room and returned a couple of minutes later with an acoustic guitar in his hands.

"I play it to the kids when they can't fall asleep." He moved a chair next to Luke's bed.

"Close your eyes and focus on the music."

Luke sent Michael a thankful look before obliging his instructions.

The soft music cleared his head and made the beeping sound fade.

Before Michael finished with the first song he was already asleep.
